Used to only be for SRAM. They've now made it for Shimano too

You are both correct and not

The original General Lee requires you to drop off the last 4 sprockets from the cassette.

You can do this for SRAM, Shimano XTR, and if you want to take your cassette apart you can do it with Deore actually SLX too)

The Shimano SLX and XT have the last 3 sprockets on a spider (XT has 2 sets of 3 on a spider) They have since released a General Lee with 3 sprockets specifically for the XT and SLX

What's the cheapest anyone found the adaptor? I know its cheaper than the XX1 but 1800 for 3-4 rings makes its close to the price. If it were 10 or 11 rings then the XX1 cheaper , no? My maths failing me again?

I have an option I'm working on, just waiting for a delivery. Cheaper but not as light and slick. Will give me an 11-41 cassette.

I'll post a how to and try to remember to put a link to the thread here.

Cool, should be interesting to see. I'm going 1x10 soon. So I'm in for new options

Look at it like this, the cost of the adapter is around R1900, SRAM 10 speed cassette around R800 = R2700, you'd spend very little time in the top 4 rings so would probably only need to replace it every 3rd / 4th time you replace the cassette, if you spread this cost across say 3 cassette changes you're looking at a cost of about R1400 per cassette change which is a lot cheaper than XX1 cassette.

When I went 1x10, the cost to go 11 speed would have added at least R6K to my build cost (XX1 Cassette, RD, Shifter, Chain & Freebody), by opting for 1x10 rather I only lost the 10(11) on the bottom and 42(40) on the top so gearing is slightly off, small price to pay for a R6K saving.

Agreed, i don't mind losing the 10T either. But worried about the 40-42T. My planned ratio is 34x11-36. Got some doubts in my abilities. The cost of the adaptor is still putting me off. Need to speak to my mate maybe he can get someone to me an adaptor.

so with the general lee you're only getting 1 cog (40t) that you cant with a 10sp cassette (36t)?

not worth it.

I guess that's debatable, big difference on a steep climb between a 36 and a 40 ;)

surely someone can just make a normal 10sp cassetet with 11-42 without having to worry about changing the hub body etc.

why should it cost anything more than a SLX cassette?

ping Suntour, ping sturmey archer, ping sunrace,

No it shouldn't, in fact Shimano could very easily do a 10-40/41/42etc. cassette with their Capreo freehubs

I'm gonna try the single Wolf ring with 11-36 first.

I got my Wolf ring today, have to say this thing looks & feels very soft - interested to see how long it lasts.

Guys, CWC is tempting me badly..... How good is R11000 odd for a full XX1 groupset??

Good price. Keep in mind you'll need the adapter for the hub as well. But none the less it's a good price.

That's a pretty darn decent price but like meentb said you need the 11spd freebody and that's assuming they make one for your hub.

I ride 32T up front with 11-36 at the back. 1x10. Ride in Stellenbosch area and I haven't found a need for gears at the top, only spun out a few times on tar on my way to trails.Shifting sucks while ridng permanently with clutch on though but it only cost me 600 for a narrow wide single ring...win-lose

Try adjusting the clutch on the RD, you can reduce the tension and it still works hundreds but easier to shift
