I havent seen a post like this, so I dared open this thread to the multitudes of opinions of fellow roadies.

As a general rule I struggle to eat anything while exercising. Its like the pathway between mouth and stomach is closed for the duration of the activity. But, riding for two, three or four hours forces you to recharge dem glutecose in dem muscles.

So after trying snacks and various bars and failing to find something I can eat (and stomach) while riding that doesnt make me nausious or cause a build up of phlem, I appeal to my fellow hubbers. What works for you?

I really like the jungle oats dark chocolate bars. They're easy to carry, you find them everywhere and they just seem the nicest to eat while riding. Tried other stuff, normal chocs suck. Apparently nougat is very good as well tho I haven't given it a try yet... I've always liked PVM energy vars and find they're great if I'm stopped and eating, but while moving, nothing beats the jungle bars.

Also, boiled baby potatoes. Have a few in a zip lock bag with a smattering of salt... I swear after a few hours in the saddle those little yellow bastards are heaven!

For racing I do gels like everyone else, but find solid food helps too, that's where the bars come in... Brilliant!

And then I don't mess with my drinks bottle. Water only. Just don't like anything else in there, and refilling is nice and easy.

Thats actually quite clever!

Yip! You can work out exactly how much carbs you want from this gel. For long rides I use this and water and for races I use the gel and 1 energy drink. The molasses is used because its mineral dense and the espresso for obvious reasons. 81% of the weight of the molasses and honey = glucose. Only 15% of the total volume needs to be molasses

Try it! I have done 4hr rides with this and water + maybe a banana

I've tried the jungle bars ( the light one without chocolate because of the dairy-causing-phlem-thing) but the chewing was quite difficult. I also trued the black cat bar with peanutbutter and nougat, but it was terrible...

I will definitely try this. How exactly would you make your gel, say for a three hour ride needing about a 100 calories?

Well if you are dead set on only consuming 100cal in that 3hrs it gives you 25g carbs

85% of this should be honey = 21g carbs from honey. Honey has 81% glucose by weight: 21g/0.81=26g honey

4g carbs from molasses which is 81% carbs by weight: 4g/0.81=5g molasses

Add you espresso, shake and you are on your way. Prepare previous night so espresso can cool down

Not dead set, just getting a easy base to work from making the maths easier to double up. :). Thus to sum up and making sure for 100 calory gel

26grams of honey

5grams of molasses

1 shot (30ml) of espresso

Thanks. I will try this for this weekend ride.

Try the dark chocolate. It's like a completely different bar. I bought the yoghurt ones by mistake once, and was utterly disgusted.

It seems like candy chocolate bars are not great. I don't know if they're too sweet? I normally love snickers, but riding, they disgust me...

And the drink stuff is fine, I just think having solid food makes a big difference..

Maybe its the bitter from the dark chocolate. Could be a definite option, thanks
