i don't think any power meters are value for money... simple ride and keep an eye your heart rate etc

Iwas also a firm believer of this but you only train properly with a power meter as your HR can mislead your efforts

a PM is just a tool. Proper training and understanding of yourself is a motivational thing. they are not related in the strong mind. Only a weak mind seeks solace in gadgets

Have you ever trained with one? I have been training with one and made tremendous progress, yes sure a solid mindset helps but I done races before where my mind said you can still win meanwhile my legs said f*%^& you I am going home....a powermetre can monitor such things.

and the data leading up to the race might even been able to predict it.

What I tried to say is that I have trained a long time using HR as my benchmark for intervals and training, built up loads of data, the last 16 weeks I have been fortunate to train with a power meter and every single ride and interval is now done properly. I have seen this myself on the figures and data gathered

Agreed, just like heart rate is just a tool as well as RPE, but as you move from RPE to HR to PM, the ability to focus your training increases, it is even more important if you are coached so the boss can adapt your plan and check if you are slacking. Hey James Cunnama doesn't use any training tools and he is one of the best triathletes in the world. I personally stay away from power training because I ride and race to enjoy myself not to punch numbers. HR is good enough for me.

Exactly!,

Now the evagelists claim you must have a power meter. I had one used it for 18months and sold it. It spent more time in the shop having the wheel rebuilt than on my bike. I've used HR and RPE and that works for me. Anyone who can't feel that not in the shape they need to be to be riding at a cerati level on that day needs to see a psychologist because theres some denial issues going on.

Power meter is probably the most data intensive tool if you know what to do with the data. Since I'm just a fun rider and don't earn a living from it, dropping R20k on a PM is more of an ego spend than a common sense one.

Just remember, it is best used together. No help going out and doing intervals at the correct Watts, but you are over trained and struggling to get your HR above 80%.

HR shows how your body is feeling, Power shows what your body is doing.

A PM puts a number to what your body is doing. Thats all it does. If you trying to move your output up by a few watts then its great.

If you're trying to get fit after a winter layoff then HR and RPE is pretty good for an experienced athlete.

Anyway, value for money is a relative thing. If the OP has R12K burning a hole in his wallet then he has some choice. If he has R25K then he has more choices.

None are going to make him a better rider without a structured training programme and riding a bike

If that is all it gave to you, you used it wrong...can't blame the tool.

Hi all,

Am also interested in a PM and have been looking at Rotor Power (http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/09/power-buyers-edition.html)

Reason being I want to get my legs stronger. Last season did 12 hours a week training and bombed out in the Argus. I'm thinking it is because I was putting out too much power in the beginning OR I was not properly trained for the group I was riding in.

The PM would have told me during training that I was loafing towards the end of the 12 week program.

The PM would have told me during the race that I was over cooking it based on my capability.

Just a real pity these things costs the price of a new bicycle.
