I currently have a 2009 road bike with Ultegra SL components and are currently looking at buying a new 2013 bike with 105 components. Should I keep the 2013 105 components on the new bike or replace them with the 2009 Ultegra SL? ... what if any is the major difference between the two except for maybe a slight weight difference? Any advice will be appreciated.

The difference is weight only, the quality of the 2013 is probably better than the 2009 Ultegra IMHO.

If it was mine, I would have kept the 105's on there.

For 1 the New STi shifters are really awesome. Better feel, more comfortable and notable the indexing/shifting stroke has been shortened, making for less travel when shifting.

Also the all internal cabling gives the bike a "clean" look.

And trust me 105 is bulletproof, you wont break it in a hurry.

Only thing I would like to see is an option for the carbon brake levers like the Ultegra has.

Keep the 105 on the bike.

I just put the latest 105 on my CAAD and I prefer it to the Force group I had on.

The under cable routing looks neat and the shifting is very smooth.

My bike did gain 300 gr though...

I'm in a similar boat, I'm looking to replace 2005 Dura Ace 7800 STI's (external gear cables) with 2010 Ultegra 6700 STI's which are only 30g heavier. I'm looking for a cleaner cockpit but it is a bit pricey to go with new Dura Ace levers.

The 105 brakes should be a little better than the older Ultegra.Other than that you won't notice much.

I've just gone from 2009 DA7800 to the new Ultegra and not much difference for me.Ultegra is only a few grams heavier.

Brakes are awesome on the Ultegra.

Shimano uses trickle down tech the new 105 has evolved a bit since 2009.
