Awesome, thanks Hubbers! These are my bikes:

Mongoose IBOC Chromoly 24 Speed SRAM X7

- The only original components are the frame and seatpost, think 1990 model

Giant Boulder Alu 24 speed Shimano Deore

- Again the only original components are the frame and seatpost, the rest are new

Giant XTC SE1 Alu 27 speed Shimano Deore XT

- I always wanted a XTC and never imagined I'd have a retro one like this. It is in new condition and has a Rockshox SID fork and has been upgraded to tubeless with full Shimano Deore XT 27 speed, approx. 11kg

Have a 2004 (or maybe 2005?) Specialized S Works Epic with XTR V Brakes idling in my cellar

Wondering what to do with it...?

Will take a picture / post it here later, maybe it will cheer the old thing up a bit

Shame on you.

I have an old Titanium Litespeed turned rigid SS with XTR V-brakes, CrossMax wheels with ceramic rims and a Ritchey fork.....Weighs nothing and climbs like a homesick angel.

I have V-brakes on the rear of my Silverback which I've converted to SS. Haven't had a chance to repair and fit a disc to the rear.

I must say that V's are useless in the Cape winter. Coming down at Tokai in the rain I was seriously considering taking them off altogether and just running front disk brakes until I repair the rear, as the V's disappear in the rain and mud.

my racebike is a 2003 santa cruz superlight, she only got the disk treatment last april. I was a bittereinder as I do lots of adventure racing and i always felt better having a setup that can be fixed on the trail with pliers.

I wouldn't say useless. If your rim is true and you have the setup right you can still get quite a bit of power with V's. Obviously it's not the same stopping power as disks, real work out on the wrists on a long switchy downhill!

but it's still way better to chow through pads through a season. In rainy mud conditions you can totally f@#$ your disks, pads and all.

I rode a Giant - WARP - WITH TRIPLE CLAMP FRONT SHOCK AND V BRAKES ALL THROUGH

1998 - 2000 - Lived in Fish Hoek and rode up silvermine, (Ou Kaapse weg) down Tokai, back up Tokai then down Silver mine - did this every Sunday from 06h00 rain or shine

I never had issues witht the brakes, in fact Ive only broken bones since moving to Gauteng and riding XC here with XT disc braked bikes..

When we did down hill in 1997/ 1998/ we didn't know about discs -- we rode hard,

and made sure we maintained the bikes, - had tubes with slime and rubber cut into 50mm

strip's put under the tyre between the tube and tyre..to prevent punctures ..

BMX racing still use V'S - they have tried discs - but gone back to V -- -
