Hey Hubbers I need your help please......

I recently got a MTB that I want to convert to a single speed, it has a tapered headset and the bearings are toast, I measured them last night (With a tape measure so measurements might be slightly out) top bearing is 28/41 and bottom bearing is 40/52, any idea where I can get replacements?

I can post pics if this helps?

Thanks.

i tried sourcing my Cane Creek replacement headset bearings from various bearing places without any success. They all tell me that the problem is that it is chambered on the one side and that their they do not have the distribution rights.

Might have more sucess in importing them but then the shipping cost may outweigh what you would have paid at your LBS.

one word of advice - shop around as bike shops do not charge a uniform price.

I found this very useful when recently building my On One frame up:

Its a bit of a mission finding the exact headset in our LBS's - most dont carry these as stock items, and often scratch around in old boxes/drawers to find something. This is my experience from visiting 5 different local fairly big name shops.

What I ended up doing is matching the headset sizing to the model best suited on the cane creek site (link above) and then went looking for it online. Finally bought one at Evans cycles in the uk, was still R300 or so cheaper landed than buying here.

Evans, CRC, Probikeshop all have quite a large selection, so it may well be your best option.

I just built up a GT Zaskar with the same free bearing set up. Got the bearing with a bevelled edge from 'the bearing man' top and bottom. Used an old insert and dust cap from an old FSA headset and it works like a charm.

Got everything sorted and a 1.5 to 1 1/8th adaptor (I had no tapered forks lying around) for about 200 ZAR....

Thanks for all of the advise, been out of the office so only catching up now.

Read up on the net a bit and it seems I need the IS41 (top) which I believe is 1 1/8" and IS52 (bottom) 1.5"

The top bearing has a bevel on the one side on the outside and the bottom bearing has a bevel on the outside as well as the inside, would these be considered standard bearings?

what make of headset is is it ?

I dont remember I'll need to check, wasn't a brand that I'm familiar with, its an integrated headset so I'll just replace the bearings, I have a feeling old bearings were installed to start with because the rest of the bike is in good / new condition and the headset has dome some serious mileage.
