Hi All.

I am looking for something to hit some local trails with (Tokia / Jonkershoek kind of thing).

I come from a Dirt Jumping / street BMX (I have a 26" NS) background so need something that can take a hit or two but I am not expecting to do road gaps or anything on this bike. I don't really want to spend too much as this will be bike #3 and I ride the others pretty much every 2nd day. I have also never really done AM so not sure I will get into it but I'm sure I will. I was originally looking at the Commencal Meta AM for about R24k but there is no stock locally.

I have come across this bike:

2009 Specialized Enduro SL Comp.

http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/archive/2009/enduro/enduroslcomp#specs

I have taken a look at it and although its a 2009 its in pristine condition and hasn't been ridden much at all.

Some questions (some are noob as this is my first Full Susp)

1. Am I mad to look at such an old bike? I originally wanted something newer but I kind of like this bikes geometry.

2. Will parts be an issue especially at the rear triangle?

3. What is a decent price to pay for such a bike considering its age? I know bikes tend to have poor resale.

4. Any other advice?

Thanks :)

Seems like a nice bike. Build to suite your riding style, I used to do street and little DJ, and build my bike with semi DJ geometry and love it. Was also my 1st full sus and too say the least, felt like cheating, haha

I bought a frame and added parts to it, much more fun that way, might work out a little more expensive, but you wont have to replace all the generic crap you get on a showroom bike

Edit:

Like this frame:

Commencal are getting rid of some of their old metas. Go to www.commencal.co.za and have a look. They had some pretty darn good deals going.

Thanks. That was initially what I was looking at but only smalls left and Im on the taller side.. Any thoughts on the Specialised?

Looks like they have the AM2 in medium and AM3 in XL. How tall are you?

You should be able to get a Brand NEW trance x3 for around 15k..use other 5k or 10k too sort out better fork and wheelset (idk if you had 24k to spend ?).

Thats the way forward i rekon... unless you want to go large and get 15k frame +xtras.Which will be better once off.

But ive seen more then 1 person hook up a trance 2011 + for under 9k so no need to settle for that spez and that geom is like most dual suspesions nowadays.

But ya i wouldnt buy that spaz unless its about 7k or less

Thanks.. That "spaz" (lol) is going for R12900... I don't really have a set budget. If I could get a Large Meta I would spend R24k but as with anything, the cheaper the better, especially considering this is new to me and I'm not sure if I will get into it. My DJ bike is my first love :w00t:

Also, about the Trance... isnt it on the more XC side of things? Although I did see Sorge throw some huge backflips and 360s on it @ Redbull Joyride.

Go carbon, esspecially if you have a dirt jump back ground. Now days carbon is stronger than most alu's and can be fixed. When carbon is fixed it usually ends up stronger and a tiny bit heavier. While a welded alu frame is still broken in my opinion. That's my 2c.

Anthem more XC.

Trance allday is what i say..prob best all round bike with even with the stock 120mm if you not that rugged or the reign next up. Trance with 140mm + fork is a pedallers reign x to me , but dont count the anthem out if you might do a 40km + cycle 120mm + upfront

Thanks for all of the links.

I get the impression the Reign is a little bit too slow and burly (like a DH bike) but I might just go and check it out this weekend. Some of those bikes put that Spaz's price into perspective (They want R13k for it)

Also a lot of these bikes appear to be mediums - I'm pretty sure I am a Large. I have a GT Hardtail that I do Argus on which is a large and its quite comfy although even on that I need to crank the seat right up.
