K2C tech tips for first timers?

HI hubbers

It seems there are a few guys who are in desperate need of some guidance in regards to some technical things, setup, pressures, and the does and donts of K2C

I for a fact would like some pointers  I am doing this one for the first time with my better half

Thanks to all

See you there

Tip #1

Service your bike two weeks in advance.

That way you can get a couple of test rides in to check that everything is 100%

That way you also avoid the rush when everyone suddenly swamps their Lbs the week before, some even leave it till Friday!!

Thanks tank and beesrib, I seached thru the forums and could not find anything :)

I service our bike myself, have mostly all the tools so in that regard i am sorted :)

dont worry about technical things, go out there and enjoy it, its like any other training ride except 3500 more people

agree plus 100.

make sure your bike is in good shape, pack enough chow and liquids, carry all the necessary repair stuff and don't hold the better half up! and report back

Don't over cook it on the first climb

True. Die ou wa pad can kill your whole ride. If your starting group is not one of the first two batches, then resign yourself to the fact that you are going to walk a bit on that climb. After that the road becomes nice and wide and the ride speeds up.

Also, beware of the twisty descents later on (kilometers 30 to 40 I think). I had a mate who landed in the stream (3 m drop) when he overcooked the one corner. He was lucky to walk away with a few scratches, but you might not be so lucky. Take some gel or nos or something to give you a boost just before the last climb (Concordia) as this one hurts a lot. From there you'll free wheel into Knysna

Old Wapad is narrow (twee spoor pad) with a high middelmannetjie, very rocky on all sides, so take care up and down. Be ready to walk / push a bit, as there is no way to remount and get pedaling again after being forced to a stop and with the whole road full of people pushing.

Very rocky down the other side, so be very carefull.

After that, nice gravel roads. A few good, long climbs, one killer descend (loooong way down into the valley) and then one hell of a climb out the other side.

Eat and drink lots (stop at waterpoints), and most importantly HAVE FUN.

O yeah, prepare for a cold shower at the finish, there is enough showers, but hot water does not last long.

Make sure you're a hot water finisher :whistling: ....

Didn't they hand out beers last year?

Not by the time I got there. Had to go and bloody buy my own. :cursing: :whistling: (and udxcob also missed out on it, as he and another chap had to babysit / nurse me to the end   )

Also: dont be an idiot like me in 2011 and skip the first two waterpoints.

Even if you just stop for a minute or so and grab a drink and snack or whatver they have.

Seems like you guys are gonna have super weather not like the day from hell (41C)

and oh yes here's the link

Very important to hydrate all the time and eat some solid (more solid) stuff as well like a banana and maybe a bar or two.

This race takes a lot out of you and you need to replenish the stores regularly.

Some good advice here, one more bit of advice is as soon as you see 80 k don't think you're home free. The last climb is the one that buries many riders that were a bit too "eager" in the earlier parts of the race ;)

My fourth hopefully an d looking forward to it. Some of the nicest scenery you will ride especially when you drop into the forest.

Enjoy!!!! Hopefully I will shake my cold and be there ;)

What you using, Tubes or tubeless?

Your "normal" pressure should suffice.

I'm a bit new to mountainbiking and just can't seem to get the tyre pressure just right. I either run too soft and compromise rolling speed or run too hard and risk traction. So what would be ideal for you guys who weight around 60kg. Oh and I'm on the normal clinchers, not tubbies.
