A link between V Gaalens and Hakahana would be awesome! What distance are we looking at between the two.

Rouxtjie, what sort of mileage and climbing metres did you rack up on your ride?

I reckon it will be about 20 km between the two...could be a little more though

We only did 40 odd km, but the climbs are tough, and the downs will test your ability. The section on the ridge is pretty cool.

It'll be an awesome ride.

The Nissan there was super tough. I found it tougher than VG. Combining the two could make for one of the best trails in the country.

I've got a few personal routes to VG. ± 55-70k option loops with 4 climbs over the mountain, stunning. Lets chat.

Did a bit of a recce there over the weekend....super place.

Safe parking

Awesome trailhead that is well stocked with goodies and the tannie makes a mean bacon and egg roll

We did the blue, black, green and red....with the black being the standout. The views are very cool but bring your climbing legs. The downs are technical and rocky and will reward anyone that knows their way around a bike.

For the spruit enduro rats...you guys should check this out as a potential enduro venue.

Will definitely be back, would be awesome if there is a link between them and fun gaalens.

What about us dirt roadies?

Went out to Hakahana Trails this morning! We did the 2012 Nissan Half Marathon, but unfortunately missed this year’s race at Hakahana. Although, I wasn’t too worried that I missed it because this year’s route apparently didn’t include the red route. The reason for going back today was to conquer the climb back over the valley (coming back on the red route). The 2012 Nissan race got the better of me there – just couldn’t get up there in a single go.

On arrival we met Johan and were pleasantly surprised by the setup since our visit for the Nissan race during 2012. What a great guy Johan is; friendly & helpful!!. After our ride we chatted about the route, the markings, etc. As mentioned by Johan on this or another post, they need riders. In some areas the grass, etc. has grown into the route – but nothing to serious. The markings are good. Here or there we got lost a little bit, but soon found our way back. And looking back it was probably because we were talking too much and not concentrating on the route markings.

So, the ride…. We did the blue, black, red, back onto blue and then onto green. The total ride was about 42km & just over 1000m ascent (measured with Garmin Edge 500). Best of all was.. mission accomplished… we rode the red climb back in a single go – came and conquered (ego restored from the “klap” received during the Nissan race of 2012). The blue trail is good fun; the black was technically challenging and tough, but not unrideable, the red was not too bad – the tough part obviously the climb coming back; the green also nice single track.

If you want a little more of a challenge than the usual Nissan Half Marathon race, then the blue, black, red & green routes in a single ride is a very good option – good training – but not at race pace – at least not for me :cursing: . And for R30, this is a steel. The trails give you a variety – from technical climbs, to road-like climbs, tough climbs, nice single track, awesome downhills, some relaxing ride in-between.

We’ll definitely go back there. From Centurion it’s about 35min drive. Well worth it the travel. Probably going back there on Sunday for some more training / suffering in preparation for the Sabie experience in a month’s time.

Nice job Johan & team – well done; hope Hakahana trails grow from strength to strength.
