I think we have this guy : Bennet Nel

We have Vince, Jan, Duran and myself building there. Judging by the smiling faces and the positive comments I'd say we are off to a good start.

I heard a Rumor that Hylton Turvey is going to be doing work in Jonkershoek.

I think you guys need this guys help: Hylton Turvey

(if you dont know who he is, google/youtube him)

Have you seen the pics and the video's of the place? I think you couldn't possibly be more wrong. We've built an amazing trail and are going to carry on building new ones and making the existing ones better.

I have to say I'm pretty insulted by that comment. Especially since you haven't even seen what we've built in a very short time-frame.

True, you guys have done a great job! Every region has its own style of building.

We in the Western Cape are known for our tech, narrow, rocky trails so lets leave the highways for the KZN boys and stick to what we love!

Ja I hear you. The thing is that bit of land that we have is steep and rocky at the top where we'll have the tech narrow stuff you are talking about. (We've already scoped out a very interesting line with rock rolls & drops) but the bottom is pretty flat so the only thing we can do really is to build the type of big flat out jumps we've built. To try make that tech will just be a complete waste of time. Conters, Tokai and even Jonkers have a similar setup where it's tight & kind of techy at the top and wide open and flat at the bottom.

It's really a function of the geography we've been presented with.

Also the ground at the bottom of Helderberg is soooo nice to work with and shape into jumps it would be a crime not to.

Is it

Few comments and questions:

- Are there other more AM type trails / plans for such trails? Just thinking that for R500 per year you are competing with Tygerberg trails (R530 pa) and Jonkers (R230 pa), which covers oodles of trail (yes, yes the trails aren't comparable) so people may want to be able to spend a few hours on trail for that price as opposed to doing 10 runs at a time;

- Instead of shuttling up with your car is it rideable up on a bike?

Hope the comments are seen as intended. Constructive.

Ja I get what you are saying. We aren't looking to make money out of this. I am not making any money and I will never make money out of it so the motive is not profit at all. In fact I've spent very close to 2k on it so far. I just want a rad place to ride my bike, improve my skills and hit 15 runs in a day on a track that wouldn't be out of place in Morzine. Sadly up till this point nothing in Cape Town has come remotely close to reaching that goal. I think there will be around 20-30 members but that's fine by me. We aren't trying to compete with Jonkers or anywhere else for that matter. But am I prepared to pay R500 a year to build and ride the EXACT trails that I want. F$%K YES!

The money collected is going to go almost exclusively back in to the trails and towards maintenance of the 4x4 track which we use a part of as the shuttle route. There is an AM trail on the property but I've never bothered trying to ride it. To be fair I've mostly been involved in the building side of things. I've only ridden my bike there 3 times.

Shuttling isn't a necessity. It's a quick and easy push up the hill.

Don't knock profits though! Profit is the greatest motivator. Something I fear may be lacking at Tokai.

I reckon I'll support Helderberg because I know eventually the track will just evolve naturally to accommodate more trails and not just one run. That's the nature of things.

Looking forward to a ride there soon (need to get the Morzine training up and running!)

What hill were you walking up yesterday? its a bitch ,especially the last bit!

But SOOOOOOOO worth it. Most fun ive had on my dh bike in a long time, and the only track where i could do 8 full runs in a row. Too bad the arm pump hit in run 9 , which was the race run...

if the shuttles were as slick as yesterday, then yes, i'd rate that place super highly. But you need decent pickups/bakkies/trucks to make it worthwhile. Pushing up will be murder.

Hahaha. I did 10 runs. Got that Morzine Death Hands feeling today. It's a pain but oh such a good pain.

It's a much quicker push that Tokai, Jonkers, Conters and any other local DH that I can think of. Especially if you miss out that crazy steep top bit.

But yes. Shuttles are optimal.

eish, I think I misunderstood you and thus you thought I was telling you "you guys are crap".

1. I thought you meant by your one post I scanned over (the way I read most long msgs on the hub) that you guys have so much to build and that you need help to build "big things".

2. I didnt know that you have actual assigned trail designers (hence nr1 again)

3. No I didnt see the videos, and only saw one pic of the big jumps

4. I agree fully that we should have many different 'trail designers' in SA to get different types of riding

5. If I thought you guys were crap, I would not have been super keen to come down in December just to ride down there

I however dont agree with your "highways" comment, have you ridden the Karkloof DH track before?

This track looked amazing...

After doing the Hartis race, and after seeing you track vid...

I felt like a kid staring at his friends eating ice creams while I have to stomach brussel sprouts, haha!

For me the potential is the big thing. I've been to MANY build days in Cape Town and I've never seen a JCB doing the dog work anywhere else. Most of the stuff in CT is built in a haphazard shitty "on a budget" way whereas the stuff we've built in Helderberg is done properly. big but safe. Like the stuff you are likely to see in a European Bike Park.

And there's scope for more. Much Much more.

I think the world is reading this if you have forgotten

Sorry Qunut. No offence to the amazing stuff you've done at your local. I'm just so exited that I've finally got the opportunity to build the type of stuff we've seen in Morzine.

Where were you btw?
