no you misunderstand. Some are on salaries of between R40-R60. Others have cars etc thrown in. Also remember that most do not only have one sponsor! They have numerous which makes up the numbers. And those numbers are gross not nett.

Ya, thought as much.

Problem is most sponsors have been taken over by bean counters and all they look at is return of investment.I agree with your analogy with Sky.We can bring that closer to home.I for one go to a lot of races but sure don't know what RE:CM or Blend or a host of other sponsors do.

And what about the elite guys such as Kulhavy, Sauser and Shurter...?

Don't know about the MTB pro's, but the ProTour road guys are starting around 500k Euros P/A as domestiques and the GT winners (Horner excepted) are in the million Euro P/A regions. Those are just team contracts. Some like Contador have (in his case) Specialized as personal sponsors and he gets a personal deal with them for appearances and stuff. Cavendish is another who has a personal deal with Spez.

As in any sport, being amongst the cream of the crop its a good living. Hard work and talent will see you through.

Just interested to see what the local bank on a monthly basis and how much the sponsors cough - flights, race entries etc

Maybe last year but 2014 is different.Things are tight this year.Horner a classic example.

I mentioned Horner. Reports on Froome are that his three year extension at Sky signed last month is for 10 million pounds.

Yep and he's probably worth every penny at the moment as the #1 rider in the world(and I don't meen UCI ranked)but comparing his pay with our local guys is like comparing what Sebastian Vettel earns compared to a local club car racing here at Killarney.

I still don't understand what the sponsors gain out of sponsoring a local team. Not much TV coverage, mostly the same guys winning here and not much spectators at the events.

Am i wrong?

Blend i know. They are a property company. BUt what are they getting out of sponsoring a MTB team. I guess thats why i dont do marketing etc.

Have a look at the type of corporates sponsoring local MTB teams or events... they are generally targeting high income individuals or other corporates, and this speaks to the people who participate in mountain biking events. So its really not so much a about physical spectators or live coverage - the target market is decision makers and infdividuals who love and partake in the sport.

So, yes - there is a very strong value proposition for local sponsorship - especially MTB. Also, although its one race a year, exposure at Cape Epic is global - and very significant for brands such as Specialized. The tour de France is no different for the roadies - sponspors get 80%+ of their ROI from the tour.

100% right FM

That's why sponsors don't stick around in SA.There is also a poor attitude with a large part of local pro riders where all that is important is"what is my deal" never thinking "what is the sponsor getting out of this".As I pointed out before, take most of the big sponsors here in SA and 99% of the public won't know what they are about. This is just my 2C from been on both sides of the fence.

For sure. My comments were in response to a question regarding the likes of Sauser and co.

I think some business owners are just very passionate about cycling, perhaps their way of contributing to cycling. Think DCM Chrome 2, 3 years back, now they have disappeared off the radar, but the owner was passionate about cycling, even bought a signed Specialized bike from Sauser after Sauser completed one of the Cape Epics one year.

Yeah i get that. Its also a tax deduction/write off. Not sure what the correct term is.

Not sure what he earns but very good source told me even Sauser's contract has changed from big pay at end of month to performance and results based. We still in a recession boys and we talking cycling, not golf, rugby soccer etc.As far as marketing, those were the first guys who got the bullit when the recesson hit.I take my hat off to those who do it for the love of the sport.Thats the only reason to sponser.Guys like Omnico and a few other have been quietly pouring money into the sport for decades. They are the real heros.
