I've recently undergone the second of two total hip replacements, following Avascular Necrosis.

Now, prior to the initial effects of the AN, I was doing about 100km/w on the bike and about 3 hours spin classes. This was 5 years ago.

I would like to hear from others who are now happily ensconced back in the saddle, after a single (or double THR).

Now I'm not expecting things to happen in the blink of an eye, but I'd appreciate some advice on this.

Many thanks.

Good point. I have not had hip replacements but was advised to as I broke the ball off inside my hip. I am back on my bikes if this is any consolation. (and I am considered a 'bullet" with regard to age only.

My mom has had about 5 hip replacements....and i remember the Dr who did her first one told me that cycling is not good for your hips....always wondered about that ever since

Yip, I was worried about that. I cannot walk far without pain but no pain onthe bike.

The doc said I should carry on because it is not weight bearing. Did not have replacements though. This is a different scenario I guess?

Hi

Im 42. The reason for the Avascular Necrosis is not clear, but it seems a common factor is scuba diving. Lots of it.

After the first THR I could walk pain free in that leg for ages, and I'm sure the bike would have been the same. I'm hoping the second one will be as successfull

The surgeon has no problems with cycling per se, in fact advises it as regards exercise, but obviously the main concern, especially on a mountain bike, is the risk of a fall. I really don't know how impact resistant these replacements are.

Anyway, as regards recovery, my plan is to start gentle spin classes in January, and hopefully climb back on an actual bike around May time frame.

Thanks for the discussion

Good man! Hope it is a good recovery. I am petrified of falling (again) so just ride for the enjpyment now and I am thankful I am able to do so. The doc told me cycling was good for circulation so I was on a trainer 6wks after both of my ops. My leg is still weak but expected I suppose. After a long ride the leg goes numb so it is my guess something was cut which was not supposed to be cut - circulation?

Good luck and hang in!
