Not exactly Cycling, but still relevant.

My Brother was stabbed last night whilst out on a run in moreletta park.

He managed to land a punch and the perp fled, but not before he managed to stick a blade in his abdomen.

Luckily no vital organs were hit and should be discharged today, but it could have ended very badly.

Seems the eastern parts of PTA are really having problems with crime, so be careful out there people..

WTF are they trying to steal from a runner or was it just a random attack?

Was he running listening to music from his phone?

The above incident just empahsise again how carefull one must be these days

Recently I was also attacked by two guys who stole my mountain bike as well as my cell phone. After noticing other incidents in the same area (Moreleta Park & Garsfontein Road) on this forum, as well as in the press, I also just wanted to post my story as a warning.

On Saturday morning, 5 Oct 2013, I was cycling along the gravel path following the fence of hte national Intelligence facility in Moreleta, and was about to cross the little river (about 100 meters from Garsfontein Road) when two guys threw a big rock against my shoulder, so that I fell of my bike.

The one took my cell phone and the other my bike and ran into the bushes towards the area known as "Plastic View".

I started walking towards the first complex and notified the guard that was manning the watch tower inside the complex, but it seemed that there was not much he could do. Shortly after, two other cyclist came by adn offerend me the use of a cell phone (I phoned a family member to meet me back at my complex). They accompanied me to my complex and there the security guards phoned the police.

Later on, after reporting to hte Garsfontein Police Station, I heard that the police went straight to Plastic View after receiving the call. After giving my statement, I went to Menlyn Shopping Centre to organise a new phone, and then I was called back to the police station - they actually caught one guy (although I could not postively identify him) and got my bikk back! so within 5 hours I had my bike back, for which Im very grateful.

I also just wanted to add my warnign (to all the others) that people that go jogging, or cycling, and walking their dogs in the area close to Plastic View must rather change their route.

 :cursing: This sucks!!!

I also frequently ride / run in that area...this is really becoming too much.

Perhaps Hubbers training in Pretoria East that have been affected by such incidents could share coordinates or Kml place marks of affected spots. In that way we can start populating, and frequently update a Google Earth map of danger areas in Pretoria East for reference when we go out to ride or run? Would be great.

Same thoughts, so did the following (using Google Earth)

Red X indicates persumed areas were attacks took place.

Red O indicates .......whatever you want to call it (maybe "Clear" View)

Green O indicates a distance radius of approximately 1.5km.....enough distance to cover like a springhaas in a short time and disappear.

Your map really points out the source of the problems even with a small 1,5km buffer.

When Plastic View gets demolished then the mugging and assaults will stop. Unfortunately the crime will probably only move as far as the illegal squatters do. Sad truth

The guy who stabbed him tried to frisk him. I assume he was looking for anything of value. Think he panicked when my bro fought back and he ran away empty handed.

Glad your Brother is ok!That section is very busy during that time of the day ,sounds like he might have been running on that cement path?I run there early mornings at least once a week.

Crazy that they try something like this with all that movement around!!!

I still cannot believe this happened at 18:00. I stay 300m from there and that is my 3x a week route that i do at 5:00. This morning, running in Wekker, I passed more than 10 joggers, almost half of them female as well. If we cannot run their, where can we run then?

I hope this was just an isolated incident. Hope he his back on his feet and running in the area in no time at all! I'm so paranoid now, buying myself pepper spray this weekend - and i'm 6ft3, should not be afraid of anything!
