CatGirl Posted November 6, 2013 Share I was looking at a carbon mtb frame on gomboom and the guy said it is a race frame and wont recommend it fror a SS.so what is the difference??? what must I look out for when looking at a mtb frame for a SS?something to do with the back triangle? My SS is gebou met 'n raam wat 'n paar jaar terug die top racer van sy brand was. Dis steeds 'n vrek lekker fiets om te ry. met of sonder ratte. maak eerder seker die raam pas jou. Dat die parte wat jy het daarop gaan werk, en daarna worry jy oor goed soos dir dropouts. Al wat 'n raam as 'n SS raam kan maak is as die dropouts nie plek het om 'n deraileur op te sit nie. The guy was probably referring to the bikes geometry when saying it was a "race" frame. Steep head angle etc. Nothing wrong with making a "race" frame into an Ss. Jewbacca Posted November 7, 2013 Share ok... A carbon SS is a recipe for disaster.... The tension put through the chain stays and the BB is far more than a geared bike. This causes stress, which in time causes the fibres to rub, which causes failure and potential death... (dramatic but you get what I mean) Also, the severe lack of lateral flex makes the bike very twitchy on those big effort climbs where you are out of your saddle fighting the bike just to turn the pedals.. (see above strees point) Steel gives you whip and a bounce and doesnt fight you.... Comfort and ease are paramount in a SS especially if you want to use it often and/or race/spend long days riding on it. I have tried all matter of material for my SS frames and go back to steel every time. PM me your budget and or specs and I can help you out. I have a store full of SS gems. I even have some ecccentric axel real hubs so you can run a regular dropout bike SS without a tensioner. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
