What do they usually have along the bike and run routes, do ONLY have Gu? Don't they also have bananas, boiled potatoes etc?

I cant afford to drop R200+ every weekend just to train with Gu...

The few times I have used Gu with long runs has caused me to get an upset stomach anyway

Water with Gels and bars of your choice is the next best option.. I also get upset if I use stuff I am not used to.. I use USN products at the moment (crazy expensive) but it seems to work for me..

try out a few and see which works best..

i use gu because i know it will be available on raceday and i am not going to experiment on raceday with some free stuff.learned that lesson long ago the hard way.

For training get Race Food. Works out to about R3.50 for 100 calories. Very nice to eat.

GU is about R20 per 100 calories.

Bananas are so cheap they are almost free.

Cool. Do they have bananas along the route on IM.

I am thinking that with my training I will use a combination of energy bars, gels and bananas. They reasoning being that I should be able to replicate that nutrition during IM, as I will be able to get gels and bananas along the route and can carry a few energy bars with me

Yes. At IMSA they also have GU Chomps which are really good.

You certainly dont need to replicate race nutrition for six months just a couple of rides.

The advantage of baby potatoes is the skin is bitter and offsets the sweet flavour overload of everything else. They can also be stuffed in your pocket without making a mess. I take them plain.

Who sells "Race Food"?

Also like that stuff. Goes down easy I find.

Dischem.

I wouldnt eat it during a Race. Too difficult to open and not easy if you have a dry mouth.

But for training its awesome.

R3.50- from VA!!!!

Race Food is awesome! The problem is I eat them whenever I feel puckish at home. R25 for 5 bars - its made by wedgewood and readily available.

Makes sense. In your experience, is there anything that closely resembles "Race Food" that would be good for races? Will be different for everyone, but I just need some ideas to experiment with. I do like the baby potatoes, but sometimes you just need something a bit more convenient (wrt to preparation).

Powerbar is my choice. It has a slightly crunchy texture. Precut the wrapper so you can just peel back with your teeth without leaving the aero bars.

I generally use Cytomax and Race Food on all my rides, occasionally a nutella sandwhich if its a long or hard one. I had tried Gu years ago, but I feel as if I hit a huge wall once the Gu 'wears out,' which I guess is why it needs to be taken every 45 minutes.

Was thinking of mixing Cytomax and Future Life cereal for the bottles on the bike, and use the Race Food as well. Has anyone mixed their own cocktails - what were your results?
