I simply carry an extra tubbie. I have heard (not experienced it yet) that it is quicker to replace a tubbie than a clincher tube. Personally I would not trust a sealant when riding at 40km/h or even worse going downhill at 60km/h + on a "patched tire".

Anyway, if you experience the unfortunate circumstance of puncturing during a race, your race is esstentially over. Whether it takes you 2 minute or 5 minutes to replace the tube\tubbie you lost the bunch, then it is simply a ride to the finish. Enjoy the vibe, have a boerie on the side of the road, drink a beer etc.

Yeah I used to do that years ago before fancy tyre sealants were popular, luckily never punctured with a tubby so never had to change one.

Garfield makes valid point if your event is IM type of event you don't want to stop racing just because of a puncture

Well not as simple in Ironman. You pay R4,200 for an entry and train for 9 months. So you really do not want to puncture and if you do then you really want to fix it :w00t:

I have done the whole tubbie thing before.

I get around 5-10 punctures a year. Put a price tag on it.....10 x R600

Yes.....THAT.

After I forked out R3000 in repairable tubbies I sold the rims and bought clinchers.

That is my story.....

I would not want to experience that. Maybe you were just one of the unlucky ones :)

A problem I'm sitting with, is that air is leaking where the extention is screwed into the valve. Am prepared to replace the tub shortly, until then I just inflate before going on a ride....its drops a bar or two overnight.

Oh BTW, I dont have a spare wheelset to use for training.

DMC, I have air leaking out there only when I inflate the wheel, it does not continue. Assuming your case is the same as mine, dont replace tubbie, it is not buggered. Depending on the tubbie, they all lose pressure over a 'short' period of time. I just inflate before every ride.

The leaking between the extension and tubbie is air leaking through the screw thread when you inflate. Fresh thread tape will solve problem, if tightening extension does not do the trick. Beware of over tightening and stripping the thread.

I hear you mate, that's why for endurance events like DC (endurance for me anyway) I use clinchers else tubbies for shorter stuff.

For me I would trust the sealant more than I would trust a newly seated tubbie.

You will/should see the sealant stop working/fail.

You might not see the glue fail on the new tyre and they should sit for a while after being glued.

I have recently started riding tubbies on the MTB and have yet to puncture so don't know how the sealant will work,

will only put in once I get a puncture.

I use the tufo tubbie tape on my rims - super fast to put a tubbie on and you can ride it right away. Also no messy glue etc.

Hi guys, have a set of Zipp tangente tubbies on my 404's, It deflated after a couple of days and when I pumped them up, the front tubbie popped.I suspect this has something to do with the stans and the deflated tubbie at the time. The puncture area is at the base of the valve, small hole. Is this repairable at all? Any bike stores that offer this sort of service?

Cheers
