Oom H, the halflink chain is also much stronger and doesn't "stretch" as quick and much as normal chain. When it does eventually stretch a bit it gives you the option of removing half a link instead of a whole link. Now this might sound like a non event but its quite important for me. I like to run my wheel as far forward in the paragon sliders, so when I install a new chain all is perfect for a while but eventually the chain stretches a bit, I then have to adjust the sliders towards the rear to maintain tension, with a halflink I can remove a link much earlier to go back to the "as far forward" position which I like than I would with a normal chain. So it gives me options really.

BUT, they are not the most friendly to work with, if I compare to a normal chain, they only fit a certain way and you cannot remove, clean and fit again anytime you want. But still worth it for me.

In my quest to find the Oracle of chain breakers to work on my half link, I managed to break a park tool CT-5

I broke a Giant Chain breaker / splitter

I I bent the pin of a X-zakt

and I still do not have a chain breaker that can easily break and repair my chain (YBN MK918H):

My problem is that the head of the pin on the chain is not flat, it is somewhat rounded. The tools are designed to push flush against the outer side of the chain, and then push the pin out. The half link is not flat at the pressure point and with the tool being slightly too small, the tool's pin slips off the chain's pin and does not push it out. The Giant tool had a hollow screw that you screw from the outer side to fit snugly around the pin and hold the chain in position. This is a brilliant design. Just a pity that the build is so terrible. The tool's pin pushed back during the 2nd time I used it! I guess it is time to check out the motorbike chain tools or order a workshop park tool. I will post here once I have a solution. Thanks for all the help from everybody so far.

Is it true that one does not need a chain tensioner when using a half link chain?

Not true....gots nothing to do with halflink chain. Guys that don't have tensioners rely on the "magic gear". That means there is enough tension in chain to maintain a good wrap and won't drop. All that a halfink allows you to do is to get even closer to that magic gear....however once the chain stretches you have to take links out and then it might or might not wrap that lekker...
