XT chainring options

I have the standard 24/38 XT 2x10 chainrings on my Anthem.

Its a bit under geared for when I have to ride on tar.

Are there other chainring sizes available that would be an easy change and not require any other mods.

How much bigger could I go with the existing chain?

thanks

Id say 40/28 but you will need a longer chain, no getting away from that

At most you'd need one extra link, but most chains are cut slightly too long anyway.

That said, you won't even notice the extra sting from the price of a chain if you're buying new rings...

That's assuming the current chain is the correct length. Pretty sure it's not... (going on past experience with the majority of out the box bikes and the care free attitude that some mechs have)

Yep, when I put on my 40/28 crank I had to put a new chain.... old one was JUST too short thats why I speak from experience

Thanks for the responses.

I think I am going to leave the MTB as is and rather go and sort out the very old road bike for the occaisional stint on the tar.

More or less on the subject ......... is it possible to mix a 26/40 ?

If the OP has managed with a 24/38, I cannot see why a 26/40 shouldn't work. But see if you can ask your LBS for a worn 40T to see if the spacing works or not.

SRAM 2x sets always jump by 50% in size because of the pickup points on the big ring, eg. 24/36, 26/39 and 28/42. Doesn't mean other combos won't work, just that those specific combos work better.

Going to bump this thread a bit since googling is sending me in circles for 3 weeks now.

I've seen various combo's for gearing choice but very seldom is the gearing wheel size specific.

Where I'm coming from: CURRENT CRANKSET: Shimano XT FC-M770 22-32-44t, CURRENT CASETTE XT M770 9 Speed 11-34t. Wheel size 26er.

SO my question, will those odd sizes that you 29er folks give a 26er the same benefit as we're generally up the hill a tad easier to start and the faster rolling stuff you guys generally have our legs spinning...

So my idea, I want to be able to wack a hill still and keep up on the straights a bit.

Would the following work for me?:

Rear 11-36T front 28-42T?

If there is already an answer on another thread, kindly hyperlink for me, I've searched like a madman and come up empty...

In 2x10 XT Shimano makes the following front ring sets

24- 36

24 - 38 (AM)

26 - 38 (AK)

28 - 40

The 38 AK and AM rings have different shift ramps to suit the different small cogs but you can run a 24 with the 38 AK ring (I'm doing it and the shift quality is ok). You can run any of the 2x10 Shimano chainring sets with med cage (GS) rear derailler but the 24 - 38 is less stressed with the long cage (SGS) RD . The SGS RD is normally only needed for 3x10 systems.

Gearing diff betwern 26er and 29er is 11% - i e same gears feel 11% harder/faster on the 29er.

38 front with 11t rear cog on 29er is not quite as fast as 44 - 11 top gear in 3x9 on a 26er. Also the 22-34 granny in 3x9 on 26er is slightly easier than 24-36 granny on 2x10 on a 29er.

3x9 simply has wider range than 2x10 but shifting on 2x10 Shimano kit is way superior.
