Practice Dirt Jumps & Tracks for Beginners in Cape Town

Hi all,

 

Can anyone tell me where I can find some tracks that I can practice my jumping on in the Southern Suburbs? I ride the single tracks @ Tokai and Jonkershoek etc, but I'm looking for something in the suburbs of Diep River / Constantia / Plumstead where I can practice for a couple of hours after work.

UCT trails - Lower campus just past the wind mill on the m3. Then there is some BMX dirt jumps

Jumps in Lakeside entrance from Boyes Drive.

In the forest on the corner of Southern Cross Drive and Rhodes Drive.

Southern Cross jumps are invite only.

 

UCT is good.

 

There is also another spot near Kirstenbosch but its still being built.

Dude, we built those jumps in the 90's, then some kids moved in and took over and now I need to be invited to ride them?

That is laughable... and also is indicative of the attitude that is thrown around and leaves a sullen taste... LOCALS ONLY BRU!!!!!

Hey I am not disagreeing with you. I have been warned not to go there as I will be F'd up but by all means... let us know.

 

Edit: Lets not ruin this for the rookie. There are dozens of great spots to ride in CPT and jumpers are all pretty friendly and you might even meet some great new mates. A bit of trails etiquette goes a long way too. Southern Cross jumps are the only place I know about where the locals are protective but that's all on hearsay. Perhaps its not like that but I know that noone else rides there which is very weird if its not true.

Thanks for the advise on all the spots in and around CT.

 

Checked out the jumps in Soetvlei Avenue - definitely not for beginners.

 

Going to go check out UCT sometime soon.

 

Pity to hear about Southern Cross jumps, will try find out the story there.

 

Might build one or two small jumps close to home just to mess around on, somewhere I won't be bothering anyone.

sun valley jumps are perfecr for beginner to intermediate riders. All the doubles are rollable and there is a sweeeeeet pump track that is ridiculously fast and fun. And the locals are all cool as well. Pump track challenge and jump session saturday 18 January from 10 am. All welcome

That's hardly the point. Land access is only one thing. The builders have lavished hundreds and possibly thousands of hours building those jumps to where they are now. The way I see it they have EVERY claim to them. Those jumps are works of art. They are also massive. If you had spent months and years getting them to where they are now you'd also be territorial over them. Go ask any volunteer trail builder how they feel about some monkey dragging their brakes through a berm they have spent a whole weekend in the blazing sun building.

 

There's very few people who are capable of hitting those jumps without putting themselves in hospital. It would take an immense set of onions and a large dose of skill to even consider hiting those jumps. And us splabbing over the internet about them will bring the exact attention those guys are trying to avoid.

 

So leave those guys be. They've built something truly beautiful. They're not hurting anyone and they're keeping it on the DL so that people don't destroy them or themselves.

 

The OP wanted beginner jumps and those are most certainly not for beginners.

Where in Sun Valley are the jumps and pumps?

There's a weird intersection on Kommetjie road where fishoek ends and Sunvalley starts. They are at that intersection.

 

Just be respectful of the builder (as we all should be) He negotiated land access and materials and has spent his own money planting trees and a ridiculous amount of hours building what is probably the best pumptrack in Cape Town.

I see you live in Constantia. There used to be a line of jumps in a park close to that stone church in Constantia. In Pinehurst road. It's kind of in the corner of the park so it's not obtrusive.

 

Maybe you can resurrect the line.
