Hi Guys

Looking for abit of advice, very unsure what to do.

I recently bought a set of 50mm dark horse wheels. I enjoy riding them. However if there is even a slight breeze, I'm on my breaks and lose so much time. I just can't get comfortable ridding them.

Any suggestions? I'm considering selling them, based on time I'm losing in races.

Thanks

Maybe they are a bit deep for your weight? Sell or trade the front wheel for a 38mm one, try and get a wider rim which will be much more stable. Seems like the ave depth for the WC is in the region of 40mm because of the wind

I don't know what you weigh, which has a big effect, but I've found that you do need to adapt your riding style to seep section wheels... You almost have to let the bike sway with the wind instead of fighting it... It can be tricky at first but you get used to it once you've out the time in...

Otherwise, if you are very lightweight, looks advice above is food... Try a shallower dish or lose the dish completely and get a super light climbing wheel set...

I'm at 73 kgs and roll with 40 mm in the Cape gusts.

Perfect.

Some of my training partners have 50 mm and roll relatively comfortably at 10-20 kgs more than my weight.

Think it could be nerves, I normally try fight the wind on the wheels. I just can't get comfy, if I leave it and relax. Can the wind blow me off my bike? I don't enjoy the feeling of not being in control.

Nah it won't blow you off your bike! Well, normal conditions anyway...

Ride loose, let the bike get pushed slightly and get back on your line... You should only really feel it if you have no riders either side, so it won't be a safety issue... In a pack you won't feel the crosswind... Just don't fight the wind! Use it..

Get yourself a 38 or something front wheel and have that as an backup.

I ride 50mm also but in the windy season in CPT I have a mavic upfront. The 50 on the back is not bothered by the wind they much.

Then in less windy days, bring out the bling :-)

Ok seems like I need to just loosen up abit, can anyone recommend any links or good articles on how to ride deep section effectively? The more I understand about them, maybe ill be feel more relaxed on them.

I've been riding my standard wheels on very windy days, not sure who went out on boxing day. But even that amount of wind freaked me out on descends.

MORE TIPS

When the extreme gusts play in the Cape, it is advisable to change your front hoop to a normal tyre.

Relaxing your grip on the bars is best,

Tighten your grip somewhat when overtaken at close range by a vehicle.

Concentrate when in the crosswinds. It does requires extra focus.

Thanks for the help, ill ride them a little longer and see how it goes. Also think ill wait till after the windy season to make a decision. Let's just hope we have a wind free argus. (LOL)

might be out of the ballpark for a dedicated roadie, but if you want to learn to relax on a bike, go ride in the dirt. The rough stuff will quickly help you realise deathgrip and stiffbody syndromes. You can learn on a roadbike of course, but if you ever wanted to figure it out for yourself, go ride dirt. You learn proper bike handling skills in a hurry.

2012 and 2013 have been relative wind-friendly to even 80mm hoops.

Hmmm, let's see what the Cape Doctor has in mind.
