Why is this? I want to get one for my old man's 50th, but if its not the way to go I will relook it.

I bought a KS lev a few months back, and I spent a looong time forum hunting for advice and experiences. Consistent sob stories from Crank Brothers, Specialized and early Reverb owners. Recent Reverb much better, but somewhat painful and senseless to have a hydraulic cable.

At the Giba enduro, Sliiick was using the command post on one of the spaz test bikes...to catapult rocks  So unless you think your dad is gonna appreciate that kind of a knock to the nads...

Nofear and I were playing with Syd's test bike while waiting in the DH queue - to the amusement of the locals. It can catapult rocks quite far.... I then let a touch of air out and it barely extended. Hope Syd didn't need it on his run? :D

Having ridden with enough guys who all stop at the top of single track to drop thier saddles I understand the value of a dropper post for the guys.

I dont have extenal gonads and have never dropped a seat post before descending but after reading this thread seems I may need/want/enjoy a dropper post.

I switched from a 26 DS to a 29 HT, I regret the loss of the DS but at the time there were no ladies specific DS 29er small enough for me (Spez has since bought out the Rumour  ) I have noticed I am more cautious on single track - Tokai, Jonkerhoek trails.

Is a dropper post going to help much or should I rather save up for a DS frame?

I think the litmus test is whether you find yourself stopping to drop your post. Then you'd obviously benefit from a dropper. Some guys don't really feel the benefit of a dropper, and its a big purchase. Next time you're at the top of a good run, drop your post by 2 inches and see what happens. If you feel a huge difference in confidence and general snap then maybe you're up for one.

Now that's I smart idea, will try this weekend.

Before I got my dropper, I constantly felt like I was at risk of going over the bars. Getting off the back is awkward, and you lose a lot of control (imho). Through single track, my saddle always felt in the way when trying to throw the bike around. It kept hitting me in the legs.

I knew I would benefit from a dropper without dropping the seat to test it out, but the final convincing thing was when I dropped my seat all the way down to do some jumping and bunny hop practice. No brainer...

Hey NixM

If you have a 31.6mm seatpost, I have a mechanical dropper you can try in the meantime.

BTW: just remembered I still have those Crank brothers cleats if you still want them.
