Shimano Pressfit BB

I have a Shimano pressfit BB (SM-BB71-41) in/on my Giant XTC, the BB is a bit moeg but i cant find the exact BB and I suspect it may be an OEM specific part (running an SLX hollowtech II crank)

My question is if the SM-BB91-41A will fit? A pressfit is a pressfit after all?

Big Ben you are indeed correct.

Fanie the BB you are looking for has an outer diameter of 86.5mm so using SM-BB91-41A (which has an outer diameter of 92mm) will not work.

Link below of where you can get a replacement

In addition the BB standard you have on your bike is called BB71 and by quoting this to your LBS they should be able to assist should you not want to venture abroad

Ok thanks, but now i am even more confused.

I thought the outer diameter was 41mm. The shell width on the bike is 89.5mm, which means the one CRC has, won't work either as it will be to short at 86.5mm.

My understanding is that the difference between the 41A, 41B, etc is the shell width and that the diameter is standard at 41mm.

awesme you are indeed correct

Apologies for talking out of my @ss

this is damn frustrating and confusing.

I might end up taking out the BB and taking it to the LBS to compare and find a replacement (not keen)

41 is the diameter and the 71 and 91 are the series (with Shimano the higher the number, the better the quality (they say!)). The bearing cup sizes are the same so if you can't get the right length you can re use the plastic insert from your old one.

cool so as long as I stick with 41 or 41A I should be ok?

@fanievb - what bb did you get? Mine is getting tired and looking to get a replacement. From what I've read here and on other forums, sounds like a BB71 / BB91 will work.

I've found this, thinking it would work in my Giant XTC Composite (2012) and XT crankset.

Any noticeable quality difference between a 71 and 91 series BB? Smoother cranking? Anything on the durability?

I got the 71. Dont really know what the difference is, but as David said above the 91 is supposed to be higher quality, so it may be a bit lighter.

my first bb (71) lasted about 3000km, but got busted after a very wet and muddy ride as the small hole on the bottom of the BB got plugged and the mud turned to grinding paste.

I got one of these http://www.cwcycles.co.za/product/shimano-press-fit-bb-mtb-sm-bb71

CWC actually had a sale (R199 ea) a while back and I got myself 2 as spares

yup, 1 too many river crossings. My first BB had about 3000km's too, but this one is packing up after not even 1000. Not sure what I have in at the moment.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I can pick up 91's for less than CWC's price on the 71. Unless I jump on 1 of their hub request threads :whistling:

yip check them holes and make sure ALL the water is out.

just a tip, when you install the new put some grease on the outside of the cups, you'll thank yourself when you need to replace it again one day.
