Yep. One of the main reasons I decided against a Spez- great bikes, awesome ride and all that. But after dishing out R50 k+ and then get told, oh by the way bring it back in a few weeks so we can service (is that shop talk for fix?) a brand new component, and then charge you some more. Nah.

What exactly gets beat up to the point of needing a service after 50hrs? Damn man, brake that part in at your factory and give me the 50hr old one instead!!

Is it possible to get rid of the brain and just put in a normal shock, I could adjust the shock from a riding position, and then not worry about the service costs.

Fsr suspension is not the best design out there, so you kinda need the brain to keep all things going smooth. If you wanna go brainless and have a good suspension platform, go Giant, BMC or any DW link bike.

What fork you put on the front, now that's a different story.

BTW I love my Brain fork. Its not quite as plush as the Fox on my hardtail, but it works. I don't have a remote on the Fox and the convenience of the brain beats the others hands down. Just set and forget, no cables and lockout levers.

Mine is due for a 50hr service this week. As I understand it the 50hr is crucial. The brass mass can definitely give of brass shavings and that can ruin the shock if the oil is not changed. I reckon the first service is the most important.

And for all the Spez haters out there. Are you servicing you Fox and RS models according to the intervals? They are not much better with their intervals.

True, but the 30 hour lowers service you can easily do yourself for chippies, and the 100 hour service costs half as much and the interval is twice as long.

Hang on a minute. let's get the facts straight. First service after 50 hours, second after 150 hours. After that, once a year. Can someone explain the Lefty costs and service intervals ?

I bought a Marathon and an Expert in December. I have had no major issues so far but this bike requires a lot of maintenance and cleaning. The assembly in the factory is not great either, in fact it borders on shocking sometimes. Had to adjust rear derailleurs on both bikes as the chains were hanging loose. Had to adjust the front mech on the marathon as it was dropping the chain all the time. Probably brought the mech down by a full centimetre.

Both bikes are going in for a shock service tomorrow and a front brake issue on the Marathon, but nothing major. Point is,when you buy a bike this expensive you need to keep your hand on it, same as an expensive car.

I am quite happy with the bike and so is the other half with hers.

I just got my suspension back from my local Spez dealer. When I got home I noticed that the rear shock that I got back was not my one. Stickers was starting to peal off and there were some other cosmetic marks on the shock as well. Phoned the shop and was told that is how it is, they cant guarantee you getting your original shock back. My shock was brand new and it went in for its first service,. I'm talking about the rear shock now.

Okay I know its only cosmetic, but I cant believe this is how Spez operate. I now have no idea how old that shock is. Any Spez dealer on here that can confirm whether this is indeed the practice?

If I have to choose over again, I will much rather buy a vipa.

I don't agree with this. Bicycles are not the most technical objects in the world, and comparison to a car is definitely not appropriate. There are a select number of components on a bike, and the fact that the bike is not adequately assembled is not an acceptable point.

Cars have 1000s of working parts, whereas a bike (no matter how expensive), has what, maybe 10-20. It's not that hard to make a bicycle reliable and to set it up properly. And when you're paying 80+k for a bike, I would damn well insist on that.

Going to mark mine before it goes in and will let you know if mine went the same route as yours. Thanks for the heads up. Was yours the new 2014 model or a the older 2013 one?

This is an interesting point. Considering the value of bike, shock and the cost of the service, I definitely think the shock should be tagged and you get your own back. It's not like a gas bottle refill!

Furthermore, you've just spent R50k or whatever on a new bike, which you look after, keep clean etc, and now you have a scruffy, scratched 2nd hand shock of indeterminate age ... not acceptable.

Wow, that's some proper BS! How can they not return your shock to you? So its just luck of the draw!
