truly sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident. I started with the aforementioned rider in d group. my situation (presumably his as well, one can only speculate) was that I had acquired a late substitution entry and wasn't permitted to be reseeded at registration. In my opinion this situation has the following shortcomings: a) it means stronger riders end up starting way back and forcing themselves through the pack out of frustration (with very unfortunate consequences, yours being the case in point) and b) slower riders could end up in a faster group that they can't hang on to and causing "blockages" (of course, at least in the latter scenario they can drop back a group, but who's really going to do that, in all seriousness?)

anyway, back to the ride: the rider mentioned above and I broke away from d group from the gun, but he had more balls than I did going through the traffic up the wa pad. he disappeared up the track while I carefully picked my way through trying to be polite as possible and get through without incident or getting in anyone's way (not easy considering the colourful abuse I endured - all fair comment I'm sure). after getting over myself I eventually succumbed to the walking (by the time we were halfway up there really was no point in forcing the issue). Was a bit disappointed to miss out on the whole sub-4 thing by a few minutes, but am more satisfied that at least no-one's ride was compromised.

my only hope is that the event organisers will permit reseeding in future at registration (not exactly out of the ordinary at most events) to avoid these kinds of incidents. in my opinion the arguments against reseeding ("sorry sir, the group sizes are already set" - seriously, how many riders are we talking about here?) far outweigh the argument for (as per the incident you endured)

other than that it's a great event and I'll be back next year (I'll try to remember to enter on time, though)

I was in the C group when you 2 came flying passed, there was some very colourful language being used by everyone.

But nothing was as annoying as that short fat guy in the yellow jersey who pushed in the middle of the track, not allowing anyone passed. After numerous people had asked / yelled / pleaded with him to move over to the left his reply was: "I paid the same entry fee as everyone else so I am entitled to be wherever I want in the road." What a chop.

Generaal Gert i saw your bike at the finish, I was convinced that so much damage must have happened hitting a rock on a fast descent. How did the rim buckle that badly for a fall that must have occured around 15km/hr, did he push you off the edge of the wa pad?

i had a lekker ride.never do any races as i am consentrating on 70.3 and IM races the last few years.tried to spend as much time in the saddle as possible as i am experimenting with new hydration and eating plans.head a lekker roadtrip from ct to willowmore via prins albert with the wife and a passenger.stopped often and took pictures of the beautifull landscape.had a lekker meal of ostrich stake and pavlova at pepis . sightseeing the next day in and around willowmore, picked up numbers etc.started in G so did not mind the little walk.Just ambled along the whole way and according to the garmin was on 61% of mhr for the race.Finished with plenty of time to share a few beers after the race while waiting for some friends who were in F,E,D groups.Roadtripping back to Mosselbay the next day.Had a lekker swim at santos beach and a few espressos with some condensedmilk and arrived home yesterday in time to pick up the kids from ouma and the dogs from the kennel. All in all a lekker outing with nothing to complain about.

I had a nice ride till the back of simola where I got a puncture (sidewall cut, that must have happened WAAAY earlier and only started loosing air there)

So all of you ride without bombs or pumps......???

I hope you guys got your PB or your sub xx:xx......

You lost out on Free beer.......

Going down Simola at about 70 k/h i saw two people on the left asking for a "jtoop", difficult to hear at 70 kph. I aint giving up my tube unless i can see the end. Had too many bad experiences on that issue. I use my pump to pump my tires as bombs run out as you noted. Seems i did go past you if the flyby is correct.

i understand that some people walk sometimes, but if you walk on the non riding side i am cool with that.also fine if the oke is riding and then has to stop for whatever reason, but please then try and move to make anough space for those that want to ride.my only gripe was on some of the roads there were some okes riding alongside each other for quite a long time so no one could pass.i did my normal dropping of gears coughing etc to alert them to my presense.after a while a politely asked the 2 okes on the right side if they might want to either pass or move over a bit if it is safe so we can pass.the oke then also said something to the effect he paid and can ride where he wants to.i let him be.when he swerved all over the place trying to put his bottle back i passed him and never saw them again.inconsiderate people you will find everywhere , but as i was not racing but riding i let it go.

what i cannot fathom is people having no back up spares and then wanting to have yours.i stopped at 27 km to help a rider out . he had a puncture.no spare tube no slime in the tube no bomb no pump.he was on a 26 and i on a 29 so my tube would not have helped a lot.you do not have to have a whole repair stand and workshop with you.i also understand that if you go through all your spares that is just a shite day in the saddle.but to start with no spares or backup plan is just plain stupid.

some people were just stupid in stopping and blocking the whole road at water points, this needs to be managed and communicated better, this thing about having paid and can ride anywhere is total BS, some sort of system needs to be in place

jip.i was on a one stop strategy, but was forced to dismount and walk through a few waterpoints and then remound on the other side.

is it just me or did wet lube not realy work lekker on the race.no shifting issues just plenty of dry noices coming from the drivetrain

yeah.... dont think wet lube is the right tool for such a dry race like this, it just attract dust and becomes grimy

Have you ever heard of BAD luck,  where you blow a tube and 4-5 bombs.....?

No Prob. If i stuff up, lose a side wall on my tubeless, have multiple punctures on my spare tube, and run out of bombs (as happened similar to you, my pump works slowly but it works) i will ask and hope someone helps. But i will not bitch and moan afterwards as people would not give up their tools due to my bad luck.

Look for the tall mofo going slowly uphill. Its probably me.
