While out cycling today, with the muggings happening here in Smitswinkel I kept wondering how can one ride in groups but not have to arrange group rides as such as everone trains slightly different times and starts/finish working at different times.

Here is what I came up with. It is propably more relevant during summer but could be adapted during winter.

How about having certain start points identified on routes? Example the golf course in Simonstown. The bottom of Chappies for rides going up Suikerbossie, and add a few more that is en route on the popular routes. Every half and hour in the mornings between 5 and say 6:30 in the morning and every half an hour between say 4 and 6 in the afternoon a group pulls off from these start points. So if you start your training ride and want to go out around to Smitswinkel you know that you can time yourself to be at the golf course at 5:30 in the morning and there would be one or more riders waiting to join you and group together and go around the peninsula or where ever.

Yes some ride faster than others but maybe it would be great if one can start informal groups and stick together.

Yes, I like the idea. I often ride alone and would not mind waiting at a designated point for a few fellow riders to arrive before carrying on through the lonely, vulnerable stretches.

Saw a lot of this on Saturday morning with guys waiting to hook up with the Hub Argus recce ride.

So it can be done.

I got the hub argus riders coming into ocean view but couldnt really have a chat as the roads where hectic nd had to keep my eyes focused and ears open. (Was riding a black Cervelo S3)

maybe next year i can hook up..

PS: Who was the guy riding a blue look think it was a 695 with one deep section wheel...?

What's the chances we can get this going properly?? Is there enough interest?

We pick a few marked out places along a loop that heads around the mountain and have an understanding that if you're looking to ride with someone rather than train on your own you stop and hook up on any 15 min intervals according to the time along the route? (i.e Meet at any of these spots on the hour or 15 past or half past or quarter to and if any other cyclists are riding at similar times who are also looking to ride with someone you informally meet up and ride along.)

Good AND SAFE places to meet up for road riding would be:

Corner of Stanhope and Main Road Claremont.

The corner of Spaanschemat and Ladies Mile. (Constantia)

Entrance to the Kalk Bay harbour. (Polana regularls will know exactly where this is)

The turn off away from Ou Kaapse towards Chapman's Peak.

Top of Chappies Lookout

Top of Suikerbossie

Bakoven Bus Stop

Corner of Queens and Victoria Road

Virgin Active Green Point Parking

Feel free to add some other logical points. Could end up with a network of places across the Western Cape.

Definitely something worth pursuing.

I would possibly look at fewer meeting spots though.

Too many meeting spots implies a very stop-start type ride needing to accommodate all with warming up etc.

Not suggesting any one ride should stop at ALL of the points, but rather that informal riders cycle to the nearest meeting point to where they live and leave on the 15 minute intervals with hopefully someone else who randomly is out on the bike at the same time in the same area. If there is no one at that spot you may catch someone somewhere else depending on your timing...

Anyone else with a better suggestion??
