What is the lightest MTB (race) shoe readily available in RSA?

RL, are you serious about this?

The difference between light and heavy shoes are probably 200g???? That is 200 ml of water!!

BTW I ride spez shoes, middle of the range and they last - for special races like CPT and the Epic.

I have Specialized comp shoes and Specialized S-works shoes. Difference is a couple of grams. However, the S-works has a carbon sole en its much stiffer and waaaay more comfy. Not always about weight, also the s-works shoes dry out very quickly once they were wet which helps when doing stage races.

Of course I'm serious about it. Same as all the other ridiculous posts I've made on the Hub :-)

Id still like to know. Man's got to have some unpractical dreams as well

Weight and stiffness really the biggest difference between cheaper and more expensive, and better quality material. In the end it comes down to how you look after them.

Mini hijack:

Hi JB. I am looking at buying another pair of mtb shoes and was wondering in what way was the stiff carbon soled S-works waaaaay more comfy? My brain would seem to think that the opposite would be true and thats why I ask. I have never had carbon soled shoes before....

Hijack over, thanks!

No problem, and again this is a personal preference. The s-works shoes have much better material around the foot, more ventilation and because of the stiff sole you dont feel the pedals at all. Also those things you turn to tighten the cables, no clue what they are called, are miles ahead of velcro. So for me, my feet feel less tired after a long ride. You can feel they are lighter aswell, def makes a difference.

I get where you're coming from, but your argument goes against most weight weenies. Otherwise there wouldn't be a market for titanium wheel nipples. or lightweight bottle cages? The weight saving on those will be less 100g.

Rivnuts in the balls of your feet. Then you can just screw the cleats in before a ride and you're good to go - zero added weight, great ventilation and quick drying too.

I too ride the S-Works 2013's (14 range is split into disciplines XCO vs XC etc), the dial thingy's (BOA) are great, after a while of water and sand, they need to be replaced, i did my road shoes Oct 2013, think a set of 4 costs me R250 (my road shoes 2.5yrs old) not bad imo.

I can't comment on the stiffness or weight but i believe carbon soled shoes are the way to go unless you walk 50% of a race.

I paid R2k for another set of MTB 2013 S-Works about a month ago, they in my cupboard cos the exchange is going to screw up the new shoe pricing badly. Compare that price to a set of Sidi's, what Sidi's you going to get and i believe Sidi's are heavier.

Don't joke, there was a okie in the East Rand, had a set of Carbon soles, with almost plakkie like straps holding it on his foot with a cleat attached, that was it.

Agreed, walking in them are terrible, they also have minimal tread on the bottom for walking compared to the cheaper ones. Saw the 2014 models today, R3999, ouch. Picked up a new pair of 2013 for R1999 about three weeks ago. Worth every penny.
