Did the Golden Gate challenge over the weekend close to clarens

27km/29km and 17km over 3 days

What an amazing experience, but my quads are shattered. The amount of mountain ascend and descends are just crazy, but was totally awesome

I did quite a few MTB stage races, but in terms of organising, food, comfort and being spoiled,  etc, this is by faaaaarrr the best I've ever experienced. Definitely one for a bucket list

Awesome areas those, Golden Gate and Clarens. They're on the route we take when we visit my mom's B&B in the Eastern Cape. We sometimes stop in certain parts of Golden Gate to take pics, and most of the time stop in Clarens for lunch on the way back home.

I didn't know Golden Gate had a trail running event, even though I don't think I'd be able to handle more than 15KM over 3 days, I'm not very running fit.

The Uitsoek Sky Marathon is a great event run in October.  They ran the first event in June last year which was a great success.  This year it will be on the 22nd October to get out of the fire season with the drought.

Sven and Andrew who, run the event are very passionate trail runners and this can be seen in what they do!

Not sure why this is held so close to the Otter

Going for the 28km, little worried cause the longest trail run I have done so far is 20km.

Ill be doing the 14km, building my base slowly

First run after a 3 week forced-hiatus (Bicycle Judo'ed me...). It hurt like hell, but I'm glad to be back  :D

...and I'm still on the lookout for a good running pack....just not Ultra Spire. But the proper Nathan Sports ones aren't imported anymore. The proper Camelbaks are out of stock. Ultimate Direction is out of stock. And the ZAR-USD isn't helping either...

Oh, forgot to mention, I got a Salomon Slab (insert long name here) 5L pack for Xmas, will feed back. Not cheap but will not be getting any cheaper soon

Feedback wil be much appreciated. A local shop still has stock (5l only not the 12)...but not too much anymore. The only reason I haven't bought it just yet is the capacity. 5l feels like it may not be enough for some of the race-packing-requirements. but 12l feels a bit overkill. a 7/8 would have been perfect...hence the opinion hunt!

Simple rules to follow..

5l = Races that are supported along the way (ie: Cape Town Ultra - tons of water points, will carry the bare necessities, less food, min. liquids)

12l = Races that have minimal or no support (ie: Mnweni - completely on your own, need to carry thermals, all food etc)

Seems CapeMulti has some options - at least for the Camelbaks. Which do you rate as "proper"?

Still quite like my Ultraspire pack, only thing that bugs me is it does not run perfect when it is getting light - gets a bit bouncy. But nothing too serious. When filled up with even just water, it sits nicely.

Edit: PS. Some of my buddies really like their Ospreys, maybe something else to have a look at.

My view of a "proper" Camelbak is something like the Ultra 4 and 10. I've seen the Ultra 4 online, but never in person to fit it. But the 10 seems to be more like what I'm looking for, but I've never seen any hint of it in SA. Copy-paste statement to Nathan and UD - they only have the "lighter" models here.

Are there any specialist shops in the Tyger / Durbanville area that will probably stock Salomon or any other reputable pack brands?

All you happy running bunnies out there... I am envious. My mileage has dropped a bit. Injured my calf before Winelands, then again during, then it healed... only for me to go and screw it up again :cursing:  end of Dec. running in Eden over lunch. "Held up" :whistling:  during Bay to Bay, but now in treatment. At least got the green light to go for short flat runs. Was supposed to have started after the weekend, but got a double-whammy with the stomach bug.

At least things are starting to look up. Was laying there whilst dagger claws were ripping my leg apart, just watching the word "Explore" under a pic of Landie Greyling... thinking "soon". My happy place... this time to get away from the claws!

I like. I also looked at the very similar - if not the same - SJ vest. But these are impossible to find in SA. Hammer Nutrition can import these on their next order, but it won't be cheap. I'm really considering the Set 5....
