Not buying into that. There is a technology called drones. I can fly one of those things. I have pals who are making a living out of filming anf taking pictures with drones and at a fraction of the cost of a heli.

where there is a will there is a way.

Commentary is pretty crap. Bring back Paul Valstar and Mike the Mike

Drones are cutting edge tech

Maybe there isn't a will.

It seems that, at this stage, at least, live broadcasting is not in the interests of the stakeholders.

Wether it's streamed or used on broadcast makes no difference. You still face the same issues, web streaming is still unreliable and a higher compression compared to a broadcast feed.

I have been very impressed with some YouTube live mtb and cx streams from the USA lately - game changer! It also media by passing the media monopoly mafia.

There is a big difference between incorporating streamed content into a live broadcast and using it in a post production facility where it can be converted into the necessary format for a post production highlights package.

Yes yes and Yebo

Exactly, and it's the pretty much the same challenges wether you live feed to the net or broadcast. So we're saying the same thing.

Nope !

I am saying that in post production they have way more opportunity to include streamed content into an delayed broadcast EXTENDED highlights package than they would if they were dealing with live broadcasts.

It's complicated.

TV broadcasting rights, mobile tv studios, covering remote locations, navigating heavy and sensitive equipment above and on arduous terrain, costs for flying multiple helicopters to cover various elite riders / groups, cost, cost and cost.

I'm with 'Dale on this one...it's a little more complicated than just flying a bunch of heli's around and can you imagine the bumpy footage from the back of a scrambler/quadbike? The costs would be astronomical!!! That being said I would love coverage similar to TDF, I'll even take coverage similar to that of the lessor known grand tours!

Absolutely, IP will be the future one way or another! ... SA has missed the deadline a couple of times to switch to DTT from analogue. As internet opens up, the appetite is going to put broadcasters on the back foot, it'll open up experiences for viewers and provide organisations like Epic bigger opportunities. Win win.

Thing is with such filming 'drones' (mostly Quadcopters / Octocopters), they can only really be used locally, like on a certain portion of a xc circuit, it has to really be line of sight from the controller, and being battery powered their endurance is not that long. I have seen them being used at the slopestyle FMB events and also in the States lately at the US Pro XC series, but they just cover one part of the circuit.

We used one with a full frame Canon 5D for a shoot. Talk about tech porn  .... big big $$ though :(

Yeah I think people are forgetting Epic stages can be up to 130km...not really the same as an oke in a big parking lot or open field...

Interesting point.

That functionality limits it use then for the ol' Epic

They have lots of cameras and loads of footage but we will never get to see most of it. Maybe some other country in the world is enjoying "real" coverage of the epic.

1 min of footage in a highlight package takes 1 hour's work. maybe that is why it is only 30mins.

they have lots of footage, just show a bit more & please do include the back markers as well, 1 or 2 comments from okes just making it could be fascinating

What's wrong with simple editing, just take out the bleeps.

Lets also not forget Red Bull TV, they have certainly go it sorted, not only in terms of production, but streaming.

They do, but not in rural mountain ranges over a large distance. Most of the stuff is from static zones, not roaming cameramen.
