Gels

Hammer is also very good! Plus you can purchase it in bulk and decanter it into holder. Also then already add water to it

In my view Hammer is one of the best products available! No artificial additives, very well balanced ingredient composition, easy on the stomach but can be pricey.

Energy Gels make me want to instantly chunder.

The texture of the liquid does not sit well with my brain apparently.

The other issue I have is that my daily caffeine intake renders the supplelemt caffeine useless.

Recently I have taken quite a liking to Racefood Nougat, really tastes nice, and seems to provide a fairly sustained release of the stuff (technical term) my body needs while riding.

You forgot they cheap as chips (literally). You can get a box of five bars for less than you pay for one gel.

Get a flask (hammer has nice flasks), buy honey and molasses, add your own espresso and you have a very cheap DIY gel that packs a massive punch!!

When you say your own espresso - do you just mean normal instant coffee or what in particular?

By espresso he means "espresso". Normal instant coffee does not constitute espresso - not even remotely.

It's those small cups you see people drink. Made by steam going through fine ground coffee beans at high pressure. (You also use this to make all the other fancy milky coffee thingies - latte, cuppachino, etc.) You can make it with fancy machines - I simply use a moka pot...

Hi there,

Found this recipe for making your own energy bars. Has anyone tried this?

4 cups oats

4 cups cereal

1 cup each filler (nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, etc.)

2 cups sweetener/binding agent (corn syrup if you’re a cash-strapped bike racer, maple syrup if you live in New England, and agave nectar or brown rice syrup if you shop at Whole Foods)

1 ½ cups peanut butter

salt to taste

Heat the sweetener and peanut butter over medium and combine the remaining ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the heated sweetener mix, pour into a large square pan, and let it cool.

I slice each batch up into 2-inch-by-2-inch squares, each of which delivers about 250 calories and 40 grams of carbs, a perfect dose of energy for 60 minutes on the bike.

Try dates instead of gels. Been using it for the last year and never looked back.

mashing dates with some cinnamon. maca powder and crushed almonds, all rolled into a ball makes for probably the best riding snack in the world!!

+1 on this. I use only dates and bananas on training rides with water.

Competitions though is GU Roctane. Just because of faster absorbtion.
