This has to be the most mouth-watering thread Inhave read in a while (except for the food, alcohol, bike pron etc !) threads :-)

Any confirmation if the multiple person races will work on iPad? Logistically tough for me to connect a tower where my potential Tacx will have to stay ...

Anyone for a ride tomorrow night at 6? I will post details of the ride tomorrow morning, but make a note to leave the office early, and put the wife on notice now that she is on duty for an hour or so.

Tonight we move to Durban, where we will ride along the M4 from Desainer circle to Ushaka Marine World. Its 32 km , with 335 meters of climbing. I will set the ride up at 5.30. The bus leaves at 6.

Who is in?

Real noob question I know, but maybe someone can talk us through the experience.

Is the Tacx virtual race purely power based, i.e. strongest rider wins? Or does it take body weight, drafting etc. into account?

Would a heavy guy go faster down the hill than a lighter guy etc.? Can you mimic some form of bunch riding?

Would be great to hear feedback as to how realistic this is compared to an actual racing scenario

All good questions Rudi, and they raise some interesting issues regarding the technology.

Firstly, neither rider weight nor things like drafting are taken into account - its power based. This leads to interesting issue as to whether its a "fair race" as I suspect that the power of the braking units on the different machines varies. I suspect that the people on the Vortex and Bushidos have it harder on the climbs than people like me on the I-Flow, or for that matter the Fortius. In fact, I have read as much on the Tacx website - but Tacx claim that they adjust for this in the software by making the I flow "go slower" on the climbs to compensate. Conversely, some of the newer units actually have a motor which powers the brake to go faster on the descents, whilst the older units make the rider work coming down the hills.

At the end of the day, its just a virtual get together to train, kinda like in a spinning class, only with a bit of competition and scenery thrown into the mix. But, I ain't really hung up on the integrity of the "racing parameters", and I couldn't really care if I come stone last every time. I just see it as an opportunity to put in time on the idt in a fun way with like minded people, and it definitely keeps the boredom at bay. That said, I definitely work harder in these "races" than when I do rides on the Tacx on my own.

get the current copy of the TTS 4 below

http://www.tacxdata.com/files/support/TTS410FULLDOWNLOAD.zip

it's 1.8Gb in size, so it can take a while to download. ;)

after that, go to the patch site (http://patches.tacxdata.com/) to get 4.10.2 update.

Ver 4 downloaded installed and fully updated to 4.10. code not working with online activation. Email to activate gives errors . Will have to try phoning support or something (sighhhhhh). Softare is useless without activation. cant even be used for local or single player

Use the diagnostic tool to send Tacx support a note of the issue. It will let send them a log file, and they will get back to you quickly with a solution.

RACE REPORT:

The race started in perfect, albeit synthetic conditions, with the aircon pumping out a 2km/ h headwind at a pleasant 17 degrees. Berry took off like a bat outta hell with some Israeli oke, and proceeded to hand our asses to us. Dipslick and The Terminator both started strong, but both suffered technicals and did not get to see Umhlanga. It was huge fun and very challenging as Berry put the hammer down and took 3.5 minutes off me, huffing and puffing, sweating like a pig all the way. on the down side, crowd support on the road was non-existent, although my cat dutifully cheered me on sitting on my desk the whole way, but she was sound asleep by the time we passed Moses Mabhida. There was another dude who DNF'd, but I am not sure why; I understand from Paul & Phil that an investigation is under way, but it don't sound too kosher to me. Kudos, and much respect to Mrs Berry - pleasure cycling with you Ma'am. Official results to follow.

Thank you, Sir, you are most kind. The pen is mightier than the Ultegra crank!
