Hi Guys,

Firstly I was wondering if anyone could ID this old frame for me? I was never in the racing scene, did a bit of street work with my buddy but that's it. I have had it for about 19 to 20 years now. Never knew what it was. Just transfered a 2 piece crank to it, bought some redline forks and went riding. Handled all the abuse I threw at it.

Secondly what would you recommend regarding resto work? I was thinking of having the chrome and rust stripped and sending it for e-coating. The coast is a crusty rust place. At the same time stripping the left over chrome might be a retarded thing to do. What do I know.

I was thinking late 80's SA build.

Le Turbo?

Some kind of Raleigh perhaps?

What say ye?

Old Raleigh burner I think judging by that join on the headtube

My brother and I had frames that looked the same as that. It was a bike called a "Comauge" (not sure I spelt it right). They had chromed frames, mine was blue and my brothers gold. Not sure if they were SA built or how good they were, but the had MX 1000 calipers and the Mongoose type 1 piece crank.

It had the same head tube gusset as pictured.

Like I say, not sure how good or popular they were, but frame looks the same.

I cant remember a Raleigh that had a double thing there at the head.

I do remember the double thing, but can't remember the make.

If I remember correctly the burner had a single one in the middle of the tube.

The bike I owned had one on either side. It looks exactly the same as the bike I had. I will try pull out some old photos and see. But I do know for sure that frame is the same style as the one I owned.

I remember these bikes with chrome frames that looked very similar to the Raleigh Burner frame design, with the brace behind the headtube, they sold at the Hypermarkets but they had quite decent builds and parts, not like the typical "hypermarket specials" at all.

Correct, my folks bought the bikes from a small family owned sports shop, not a bike shop but a general sports shop. My brothers was the bomb, it had a 'gold chrome" finish with gold MX 1000 calipers, yellow cobra grips, gold rims and black pads. They really were good bikes.

Will have to dig up some old pictures from the folks place... If they still have some.

That looks to me like a Le Turbo frame - possibly either a Grid 5 or a Grid 3.  The first Grid 5 frames were almost cribs of the Redline (with a small diamond gusset under the downtube), but the later ones had that specific shape gusset between the top tube and the downtube.
