Greetings to all hubbers. It seems i am having a run of bad luck in stead of running.I broke my foot to be more spesific the 5th metarsal on a brick run on 23 feb this year.was operated on 1 march where the surgeon opened up and did an internal fixating with some wire and 2 pins.the pins and wire is coming out in about 2 weeks from now.foot is still swollen and struggling to walk properly.went from a cast with 2 crutches to moonboot with 2 crutches then 1 crutch then only moonboot and today is the first day of normal shoe.is there anyone out there who had something similar.lucky is was after 70.3 but i had to follow IM from the couch.I have been swimming with a pull bouy as i cannot kick as yet.any ideas apart from pain is your friend?

Go back to the surgeon to look at it.... Fractured Metatarsals take a long time to heal properly, and its completely possibly the fracture does not have complete union yet, or one of the wires/pins is broken.

Kind of depends on what the original fracture looked like - I would estimate 4 - 8 months before running without concerns again - it's a slow process, and in this case, pain is your enemy - avoid it at all costs.

I have a friend going through trying to get running again after a stress fracture to metatarsal 4 - think she is about 6 months in and still limited quantities of running by her therapists (sport science in CT)

Sorry to hear about this, hope it heals properly.

Did you have any previous metatarsal issues BEFORE the fracture, i.e. dropped metatarsals or pain in the area from pressure after running / cycling?

There are many different types of fractures of the 5th metatarsal. I suspect you have a base of 5 #. Two types exist. One type where the line goes into the joint between 4 and 5 can take a long time (sometimes never) to be painfree. It sounds like you had a tensionband type of fixation. These can sometimes irritate the inplantation of the Peroneus Longus tendon. If this is the case your pain will only start to resolve after removal of metal. 3 to 6 months is not long in the world of foot fractures. Ask Richie McCaw...

no issues ever prior to this incident.missed the pavement rolled the ankle and boom.

Tensionband. Will need removal in my opinion. I cannot clearly see the fracture line. Appears to be the friendlier fracture. Should not cause longterm disability.

PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE....

From firsthand experience the bones in your foot after injuries are extremely sensative and take time to recovery to a sense of 100%

16 months ago i shattered my navicular and dislocated my 4th and 5th metetarsals... i had the metatarsals fixed with K-wies and the navicular with a plate and 5 screws. I was completely non-weight bearing for 4 months before having everything removed and starting with physio to get mobility back in my leg and ankle.

My leg all but disintegrated in those 4 months, my ankle seemingly froze up and my achileas shrunk, as mentioned it all happened 16 months ago and i still walk with a bad limp, struggle with swelling and pain. Everything has improved quite a bit over the last month or so after spending extensive time with a biokineticist...

Just be patient with the rehab and do extensive physio and stretching on your achilleas and ankle joint to get mobility back. It will get frustrating to start.

Im seeing 2 specialists in Cape Town next week for an update and a discussion about what my future looks like, extremely nervous and anxious to hear the outcomes.

Good luck with the recovery
