I think it was a combination of narrow roads and high pace being set. Just prior to the crash there were guys riding on the dirt next to the road to try and get to the front.

IMO the riders are falling much easier than normal...because of the roads not being "washed" clean by some good lots of hard rain, watch that crash video https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/138525-giro-d-italia-2014/page__st__720 where the ?moviestar? (not sure about that) riders bike just slides from under him for no reason other than it looks like the surface has a slight camber.

Narrow roads are par for the course and that particular section was not that narrow nor was the traffic circle that narrow, just bladdy slippery

Tough to say from that video but it does look like he just slipped. However that crash was not the problem. The carnage further up at the traffic circle did the damage.

Hoping for better weather today

Watched the last 10km again last night with sound and it looks like there was 3 crashes. The coverage isn't clear but BMC was at the front and setting the pace before the crash. I'm not sure they "attacked" or continued at pace. Movistar and AG2R should have a long hard look at themselves for not organising the chase properly. Gap was only 30 seconds but it increased. Matthews did what he had to in order to keep the jersey.

Also watched TOC and Wiggo set the pace right from the bottom of the climb. I never liked him but it was fantastic to see a display like that. It was understandable that the guys attacked at the top which is also the steepest part. Think I'm warming to Wiggo.

As for my fantasy team - I should rename them. Purito out, Viviani forgot how to sprint etc etc. I hang my head.

Seems like they continued at pace and did not get on the gas after the fall.

Those roads appear to be like ice rinks.

One minute you're padaling along merrily, and the next you're sliding along on your back.

There are officially 190 riders left in the Giro d'Italia. Eight riders have been forced to abandon the race during the opening six stages.

Posted

Sadly another rider has been forced to abandon. Frenchman Maxime Méderel (Europcar) has climbed off after 9km of the stage.

Today's stage is expected to end with a sprint finish.

The finish is the centre of Foligno, with a series of tight turns in the final two kilometres.

The five are: Robinson Chalapud (Colombia), Jose Herrada (Movistar), Winner Anacona (Lampre-Merida), Bjorn Thurau (Europcar) and Nicola Boem (Bardiani-CSF).
