No. Those are the illegal trails, built and maintained illegally, by rogue builders. Anyone who rides them is prosecutable as a trespasser.

Well then, that would be a whole lot of people including some pros!!!!!

Yeah. That's a problem of lackadaisical enforcement strategy of the past, as well as an issue of entitlement that is pervading today's society. One thing is for sure - land owners are sick and tired of people making up their own rules and riding where they are not allowed to. That was made clear at the meeting @ Dirtopia that happened late last year. Be prepared for far stricter enforcement pretty much everywhere. And Ignorance is not an excuse.

Hi all,

The Tokai mtb website (http://tokaimtb.co.za/ )is up and running and we'd love for you all to check it out. It's been up for a few months now actually but this is the formal announcement ;)

As with all websites, it's a work in progress and we know that it needs a bit more work which the TokaiMTB committee is sorting out whenever we can.

The main aim of it is to educate people as to the history of Tokai and the proposed future of it's trails and all that it entails. We've got some maps (which still need work and updating), opening times and directions as well emergency numbers for those horrible accidents.

We've also added donation functionality (and will accept credit card payments in the future) so that riders can donate towards funds for trail building, as your Tokai trail entry fees do no go towards the trails (which is also mentioned on the website)

The volunteer trail building dates will be updated on it as well as a bit of information about those days.

Obviously, we've added a few contact email addresses so that those with complaints and suggestions can write to the committee and we can take it from there and put pressure on TMNP with written proof from the public.

Please check it out and we'll be printing some flyers soon to hand out to the riding public in the parking lot.

We'd like as many people to know about the website and the committee so that riders know where there money is going and what the committee is trying to achieve which, in short, is better trails & more trails for Tokai.

To add to my earlier comments - That new trail plan looks very ambitious. Fantastic if you can get it to happen but boy do you have your work cut out for you, thats going to be some process for you to deal with.

A pump track at a trail's start/finish area will go a long way in addressing the lack of skill of your average SA MTB rider.

Yip can vouch for that from personal experience. However, where exactly would you want to have it built. Not sure there's enough space at the car park.

I am not a cepetonian or Tokai regular, so I don't know if there is a suitable spot. I just mentioned in general that most trails could do with a pump track.

there is a suitable spot, and there are plans for one... Not anytime soon though, unfortunately

There are no plans for a pump track on the future trail map that I've seen. I don't know where you're getting your information from.

If you'd like to see the trails that are planned for the future please look at the TokaiMTB website. They are on there.

A proposed pumptrack has never been mentioned at any of the committee meetings.

Sorry, skills park... and there were plans to introduce some sort of pump track. Ask Deon.

As for not being discussed at the meetings, there were actual meetings before the change in committee, you know. Where plans and such were discussed.

But as I said - it wasn't going to happen any time soon. But it was (previously) on the cards.

For a work in progress it seems to be quite user friendly and well laid out. So far so good!

Duane, the pumptrack is to be included in the skills park. This has already received a tentative yes (not go-ahead) with the area allocated to the Quarry, the gum trees (Roots) and below the river adjoining the main JT. The main driver behind the project is the PPA (Gary K) and it was agreed that main input should come from the skills clinic operators making use of Tokai. There are several operators who have a stake in the area and are able to provide input for absolute novices to experienced riders looking for progression.

As Myles says, it has been in discussion prior to the committee being formed and will be included in the facilities as part of the vision - which we are working on now. It is not possible to indicate it as a trail on the map but I'll demarcate the area on a separate map and send to Gary for comment/approval.. this will need extensive planning and detailed illustrations of planned features. Everything will need to be specced.

A kids pump trail around the bike wash facility may even be in the pipeline... would be a nice addition along with a bench and umbrella.

Great website... maybe a link/explanation to permits required and how they work?

Hi Duncan, there is a link under "Costs" on the front page which can also be found under "Park Details" - http://tokaimtb.co.z...ces/directions/

Costs

CYCLISTS: Day pass R45 or Annual Activity Permit R430 (Activity Card info)

Day pass: A day pass is required and can be bought from the Picnic sales hut on your way up to the trails. The hut is located on your right at the Picnic gate entrance, if you reach the Manor House at the top of the road without seeing it, you’ve gone too far.

Annual My Activity Permit: The My Activity Permit is required by individuals who make use of the Park to undertake Mountain biking as an activity where it is permitted. This option the best value for money at Tokai. Unlike the Day Pass, the My Activity Permit entitles the rider to unlimited entries for the year. It can be purchased at any one of the following outlets or from the Tokai Tourist Office in Tokai Road(Mondays to Fridays 08:00-16:00, closed daily between 12:30pm – 13:00pm)
