Hey guys

For the first time over the weekend on a 2h30 ride i started getting uncomfortable pain, almost like cramping in my shoulders and pins and needles in my left hand. The pain seemed worse in my left shoulder.

The last few km were so uncomfortable and i was moving around continously from the drops to the top of the bars and then left hand off to get the feeling back.

Anyone experienced this before or have any ideas whats causing this all of a sudden?

Is it maybe a question of bike setup?

Thanks

While you ride, you can push your chest towards the handlebars, while trying to push your shoulder blades closer together taking as much weight off your handlebars as possible.

I get it from time to time, and this aleviates the problem slightly.

Ever done a bike set-up, you might be either be hunched or over-extending.

If so, hit the gym and strengthen the arms, shoulders, etc. and improve your muscular endurance.

This could be due to the frame being too big, the stem being too long... OR perhaps something minor which could be resolved with a bike setup.

Is the pain in the front of your shoulder? And has it just recently started, ie you've done long rides before and are only getting this pain now? Are the pins and needles only in your hand or other areas as well?

There are lots of different things that can cause the pain, most common is bike setup and muscle imbalance.

Another common one is that your pec-minor is in spasm and causing it to pinch the nerve, which leads to the pins and needles feeling in your hands.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you can't get it sorted and it persists, and you're in the Cape Town area, then PM me. I've been through hell and back the last 6 months with shoulder/neck/arm pain and have finally found some people that actually make sense and don't want to just cut you up.

Thanks for all the replies...

Ive never had the pain before and i dont get it on my shorter rides during the week....

It is a new bike and this was my first proper ride of long distance and this was the first time it happened. Never happened on my previous bike.

I will look at going for a bike fitment at the end of the month and see what comes from that.
