Now that my epic training (and epic) is over due to breaking my wrist, I dont' really know how much I should be training...

My next race is Bike4beasts - 64km of fairly flat but sandy bushveld.  Now, for running, as far as a remember, they say that if you are running the total length of the race in a training week, that's a good minimum i.e. you should be ok for that race distance.  E.g. for comrades, if you do a 90km week, you at least have done a reasonable minimum.

Is there a similar rule for cycling?  If I'm aiming for a good 64km, what sort of max training week should I be looking at?  I'd probably carry on using the 12 week polar schedule - just need to know what to set my max week at...

cheers

I would recommend a coach or some kind of expert to give you advice, but my personal experience, at least 7hrs a week to have some sort of fitness and then to at least enjoy a race i do with out suffering to much just to stay on the bike. Witrot2008-03-07 09:42:47

how did you work out how much to train for the Epic ?

The Polar guys said do a 16 week programme with a 15hr max week... used that as a basis.  Was getting lekker fit, but can't justify that amount of time on a bike without a reason like the epic.

Im sure if you ask the coaches they would indicate that you probably need to start training with more intensity than you would have for the epic.

The shorter races are at much higher intensity so you should probably look at some threshold intervals or 20 min hill repeats or something like that.

It depends how you look at this...

For me it is quite simple:

If you want to stay fit and get stronger get a coach and make it his or her problem. The computrainer will probably be your best mate for the next 6 weeks.

If you enjoy food and life as much as I do, you have to train as follows...

After a 3hr ride ... jaaaa.. you can have a cuppacino.....Thumbs%20Up

If you want a pancake with you cuppo, ask Taylorchick, you have to do another 30 min with at least one sprint!!!Big%20smile

Ok, Ok... genoeg grappies,

Monday - rest day

Tuesday - 2hr ride with some climbs in it

Wednesday - 3hr ride, just the way you like it

Thursday - 2hr ride, 3 x 15 sec sprints and 1 x 10 min 80% tempo effort

Vryday - 1 hr easy active rest

Saturday - Club ride/Race

Sunday - Club ride/Race

That is the basic and sustainable and will be more that good enough to ensure a good level of fitness.
