A railway sleeper with ship anchors for wheels would perhaps be the most apt comparison

That would be the Stumpy IMHO...

The Trek Superfly's geometry feels very similar to the Camber. I rode the superfly for 2 years and tested the S-Works Camber at Groenkloof in February. The ride is very similar

After the comedians had their fun, to answer your question. Pyga one ten, Santa Cruz Tallboy, Rocky Mountain Vertex, and various others which I would not bother looking at, cause if you in the market for that sort of bike, the Camber is hard to beat in terms of bang for buck.

But seriously, my mate has one and it's forken heavy. Where does the weight come from? Is it the frame, we can't find a weight spec for this frame anywhere.

Agree. Looking at new wheels for my wife's camber carbon comp to start getting the weight down.

Would also look at Pyga 110 and Tallboy.

Which one does he have and size? What is your definition of heavy for a dual sus with 110mm travel + possible dropper post /swat tools?

Giant Trance X 29er, 120mm travel, frame weight 2670 grams (http://www.pinkbike.com/news/Giant-Trance-X-29er-2013-First-look.html). The stock wheels and dropper post are heavy (I have the X1 version), but it can be made relatively light with the right kit.

I looked at the Camber, but the giant was a couple grand cheaper and came with a stock dropper post. Yes I am biased, but it has served me well in Gauteng (with the odd trip to Karkloof).

Dunno about the competition but I ride a 2014 Camber Comp Carbon and it is a FANTASTIC bike.

Yes, it's a little on the heavy side but you hardly notice when climbing.

Also, I am no great/skilled mtber but the good okes struggle to keep up with me on the downhills / rough stuff.

He's got the alu model, a large.

I can't remember what it weighs but we compared all our bikes recently and it was the heaviest by about 1.5 kg.

That's comparing it against other large ali full sussers, similar price range.

Weight seems to be a common complaint on this model but strangely no-one moans about how it handles...

The Carbon is a big step up in terms of weight loss and components over the alu. My mate has the 2014 s works medium, and it weighs 10,8kg, crazy light. Even the comp carbon 2014 is just over 12kg.

The Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon will probably be quite a bit more expensive but I believe it is a much better bike.
