...about to move from CS to MW...and herewith their response to some questions...

Q: Will my bicycle be covered for accidental damage?

A: All sporting equipment, excluding bicycles, are not covered for accidental damage whilst in use.

Q:Does this include, Frame, components and wheels, carbon or aluminium for replacement, irrespective of under manufacturer warranty, irrespective of proof of purchase or ownership?

A:Yes it does

MiWays premium for 2 bicycles is about R25 less than my current premium at CS for one bicycle.

My friend purchased a bike yesterday. This evening he sent me a sms stating that he had a chat with cyclesure today and he was impressed.

I told him to stay away, they are ****!!

So after this debacle I decided to get a quote from Discovery insurance for my Bike and kit that I have insured with Cyclesure. I currently pay R771.11 and got a quote for R290, so I guess it a no brainer, Ciao Ciao Cyclesure!

But are there any hidden issues that will give you hassles if you have to claim?

I asked them to give me the specifics concerning cycling equipment and it seems that all is in order, I have the rest of my short term insurance with them and have gotten pretty good service in the past.

It really looks like many of us were lead to believe Cyclesure was specially awesome because it was tailored for bikers and the particular situations and challenges we encounter, making sure we and our bikes were specially looked after, turns out for all intents and purposes the only thing really cycling special about Cyclesure is the name, that's about it, just a little bit of marketing spin and no depth or insight into our needs. Might as well get your bike insured as all risks with your household policy, the terms and conditions will probably be less onerous!

that is what I found. I am with Santam and they are NOT the cheapest, but are reasonable. and I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY ISSUES.

Nah. When I was with Discovery I had a chat to the product designer & lead claims assessor regarding this particular thing, and it's all encompassing.

Accidental damage, theft on the road, damage in competition and so on. Only thing you need to ensure is that when it's on your car, it is properly secured. Properly secured means either attached to a purpose built bike carrier with a factory fitted lock, or a chain of sufficient size (12mm links or braided cable - relatively small) and a hardened shackle lock. That's standard practice though. If it's IN your car, your car just needs to be locked when you're not in it. If in the back of a bakkie, locked to the roll bar the same as it would be at home. In a canopy - canopy must be lockable, and locked.

I've claimed from them for theft from home, no sign of forced entry. Bike was in the back garden while we were home, and the next minute it wasn't. No hassle.

Next theft was just before we put the lift-proofing on the leccie gate, and the bikes we weren't using for the Argus were locked up in our carport - chained to a rawl bolt in the wall. Guys just used bolt cutters and they were through. Again, no sign of forced entry, but the cut chain was there for all to see. Got home and bikes were gone.No problem.

FWIW I'm happy with the coverage that they give on bikes, otherwise I wouldn't have used them. They also paid out for damage to shoes and clothing as a result of a concerted attack by my puppy, when he was still young... I kid you not.

Are you no longer representing Discovery, Myles?

Nah, been an independent broker for the past 4 years or so. Still do a lot of life business through disco as well as health, but I no longer advise advisors or train them up on disco stuff. Saw how much kaaaaak advice was being dispensed and sorta made it my mission to help clean things up where or when I could.

Still, I know a kaaak load on the product, and I consider myself a discovery specialist.

Also trying to concentrate more on investment and growing my AUM. Far more sustainable and less fractious ito product and churning. It's all about the fees, performance and flexibility in investment. And the numbers don't lie.
