Collision on Vasbyt

I've taken to riding a bit behind someone else (going down that section), so at least I'll hear the crash and the swearing to give me some warning  I find Pain or Shine to be a particularly good sweeper. When he rides in front of me, I sometimes find ascending riders and bikes hiding in the bushes on the side of the trail. ;)

Just wanted to let everybody know that I had a collision with an ascending rider on the section of Vasbyt below the road. The section which has been recently smoothed out. Took the small jump just before the blind right hand corner, and as I landed I saw the other rider. Managed to get on the brakes, but couldn't stop altogether.

Hit his handlebar with my forearm, and he ended up in the bush to the left of the trail.. No damage fortunately, but this could have been pretty serious, as I was actually going a bit slower than I normally go through there.

To the other rider, if you're on the Hub, my sincerest apologies, but I tried my best to avoid you. Unfortunately I went left and you went to your right, so we both ended up on the same side. You seemed OK, but hope there are no latent injuries. My forearm is a bit sore, but nothing serious.

To the powers that be, a divert for ascending riders is desperately needed for that blind corner, it's just too easy to carry loads of speed through that section.

I've been saying this for a while now and now that this section has been worked on its even faster than it used to be, its really dangerous now and its only a matter of time till someone does that nice jump and lands on someone coming around the corner. I've already had 2 close calls there

Its a huge problem and its been identified many times. Now with more riders and the trail riding beautifully everyone is taking huge risks and riding like they're in a DH World cup event.

Directionality on this section of trail is being a necessity not a luxury. Even the levels higher up are going to require consideration within a year.

Riders also need to slow down. There is just too many blind spots to be riding Vasbyt down as fast as they are currently

The way that section flows, there are going to be many of these collisions. Our group actually opts to rather do the jeep track up, (boring as it may be) so as not to spoil any body's fun coming down.

Ditto, also much safer and easier on my medical aid savings

Going up bluegums is also an option.

Hey man. Check out the proposed trail map on the link below. The yellow trails are the proposed new trails. You'll see a route that incorporates the gum stand slightly to the north of vasbyt. that particular trail will also incorporate the diss used jeeptrack in that area re purposed as singletrack.

Thanks, will have a look. No sure exactly where it is. We usually do Faerie Garden, followed by My Roots, we then take the jeep track all the way to Lizard.

Where exactly is Blue Gums.? I've checked the website but it's not clear?

The Vasbyt and DH3 trails are in the area I've circled (now you know why I'm not an artist) The yellow is the proposed new trail. I think the crude arrow I've made is what lefty is referring to as blue gums. not 100% sure tho.

go up the fire rd past quarry, take next rd to the right. You'll go past vasbyt at the jump we've been talking about, about 50m on you'll see a trail starting on your left, that bluegums

That looks awesome, any chance we could incorporate the trail that comes down from the saddle on your way up to the mast to join into cobra...that would be an epic trail

On Friday some dude was riding up Mamba. Luckily I was waiting at the top so no mid trail meeting. Then yesterday I met a guy riding up Boomslang - I had just hit the first jump but he was far enough away to see me and got out of the way. In passing I suggested that it was not a good up route but he was adamant that "this route is bi-directional". I distinctly recall that the old Boomslang had two up lines. The gnarly rock drop ( which some tools still rode up until a sign was put there) and an easier line to the right of it (if descending) Now there is one line and at times there is a bit of speed to be had when descending. Another recipe for an impact or two, methinks. Also not sure where said rider got his bi-directional idea from - the website? To me, common sense dictates that faster trails like the snakes are not ideal as up routes - they are too much fun down :-)

In Jonkers trails like the snakes ( Canaries) are all DH only!
