Collision on Vasbyt

if Karl has his M9 chainstay in long configuration, then it's a sumbitch to get that bike to pop without some speed. Short length on the chainstay (steepens the HA and raises the BB though), and shock position to progressive position will firm it up nicely so the rear doesn't soak up the lip which it is very prone to do. what makes it great for smashing rock gardens makes it a hippo to pop with.

Both of the Ebels are running long travel but in the progressive shock position. Karl is so strong at the moment tho. He stood and cranked that big bertha all the way to the top of DH1. No pushing through the forest.

I've changed my Tracer to short travel mode. It feels MUCH better. Climbs better Duh. But when I point it down the mountain with propedal off it doesn't feel wallowy like it used to.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but it is relevant.

Is there an alternative to going up the jeep track? That section really is the bane of my Tokai riding experience.

I've gone up Vasbyt on a very early morning once when there were only a handful of cars in the parking area, so I knew it would be quiet, and it was fantastic! Far more enjoyable than going up the jeep track. But I would never do this normally - especially not now, the trail is in amazing condition and is very fast, and I would hate to have my run ruined so I won't do it to others.

There is a trail that runs off of Fairy Garden on the left just before the trial drops to the river. What is this one? I don't see it on any maps, and I've not heard anyone talking about it either. I went up this one a while ago and I think it popped out at the same level as Lizards (from memory - it was a while back). Can something like that not be called the 'up' route?

I'd love to have an alternative to that damn jeep track.

That little trail is one of the many "horse trails" and is an illegal trail. Not to be ridden, in other words.

Unfortunately, for the moment there is only really Vasbyt to go up, apart from the jeep track. There are plans for a dedicated up route, but that will take time to come to bear, unfortunately...

Hey man.

That's an illegal trail. Please don't ride it.

Check out the plan for Tokai. The proposed trails are in yellow on the 3 year vision map but these are yet to be approved.

i dont enjoy the slog up the jeep track either. i always ride up vasbyt, always early morning or late afternoon. ive encountered many down riders but ive never once gotten in anyones way. im always able to spot the riders coming because im always on the look out for them. i dont race up, its a warm up. being tall also helps, i sit high and am able to see over the bushes easily.

You can ride up the fire rd a bit, once past the quarry take the first rd to the right, carry on along that rd, you'll cross over vasbyt trail, keep going almost till you get to the fence, you'll see some ST on the left heading into the gum trees. You can ride up that to the top fire rd and isn't busy so you wont get in the way of anyone. That trail I think is called blue gums

Ok, thanks guys. I had a feeling that may be the case... Pity.

Guess I'll stick to the jeep track until there's an alternative.

I've joined (well, pending approval) the FB builders group - I'd like to lend a hand on the next build day. Loving the work that's been happening recently and would like to do my part.

Hey man.

The regular volunteer build happens first Saturday of every month. Meet at the gate at 9am. Look out for a white Nissan pickup with wheelbarrows on it, a blue Ford Ranger or a Black Ford Ranger. Deon, Vince and myself (Duane) are on the TokiMTB committee and we control the build days.

The current dh upgrade project is every weekend on Saturdays.

Thanks so much to all the volunteers that are helping and have helped in the past. Tokai would be in a faaar worse condition if it wasn't for these people.

Can I join on Saturday, I am not a DH rider but I regularly ride the DH line. I rode past you guys four times on Saturday. I would like to lend a hand if I can, not sure how much help my skinny XC arms can provide but I will give it ago.

I promise to only talk about the epic 3 times during the morning...

Look one post above yours for the alternative

If you are a XC rider go in baggies. This is not optional. Otherwise we stick out like sore thumbs!!

I must let you know that on one build a few months ago, a xc dude pitched in for the full 4 hours. That he was wearing lycra just made it more incredible.. we don't often see guys giving up their whole ride to dig like demons.

Oh, PS.. I'm no downhiller either and there is no prerequisite for who helps but baggies makes it a lot easier to look in your direction when you are bending over digging etc... :D

This one is not entirely legal either but there are blurred lines over who's property that trail runs through.. mums the word.

Really? I always thought that was an official Trail.

You learn something new every day.
