hi there all need some help....

After my last bike service i decided im going to start doing some of it myself.

So the first thing i wanted to look at was getting my cassette off and giving it a proper clean and if needed replacing it and the chain. So i bought all the necessary tools for the job ( chain whip + lock ring). I removed the lock nut and the smallest cog with out any trouble, but that was it the remaining 8 didn't want to move no matter what i do, not sure if its stuck or if there is something im missing that needs to be loosen!!! Was tempted to do the old Jeremy Clarkson and hit it with a hammer but decide to rather get some pro help...

Can anyone help me out please?

Regards

Maybe the cassette has eaten into the freehub body. Might need some wiggling / hammer to loosen it.

Dewald, if you have an aluminium freehub body then, as stated above, the cassette can bite into it. You just need to tap it a bit in the reverse direction.

Depending on the cassette you can remove the gears one at a time (or the ones that are riveted together). Helps to have two chain whips. One to hold the cassette and one to reverse the gears.

Steel cassette on aluminium freehub is always going to do this. Bigger stronger riders make it even worse. Mine dug into my Hope freehub by about 4mm. Ever since then, when buying Hope hubs, I always ask them to swop the freehub for a steel version. They do this at no charge.

Hammer and punch or blunt screwdriver. Orientate the wheel so that the cassette is facing down. Put a piece of wood or hard rubber under the end cap. Rest the punch through the spokes on the back of the cassette and give it one or two firm blows with the hammer.

They are known to get jammed, even with the metal insert.

Had quite a struggle to get mine off the last time.

Make sure you tighten it to the correct torque settings. Under tightened there is a bit of forwards and backwards movement that drastically increase the problem.

Just my 2cents observation.
