My 2c. There are a lot of factors that influence the price. Supply and demand being foremost of them, hence bikes taking longer to sell. There have been one or 2 times that I have looked at bike prices and thought they are rip offs. But this is the minority with people grossly overestimating value or just taking the piss. Real value is what both parties see as a fair price at the end of the day to complete a sale.

Yes bikes take a knock, but price increases have also been dramatic. So 2-3 year old bikes might still be selling at a price point similar to what a similar 1 year old bike would be, taking similar condition into account.

It's strange to me that the OP has been attacked in some of the replies. OP, I for one agree with your formula more or less. As you said, a good place to start anyway. If it's a high end bike, maybe that first year might be 30% or 40% off but I do agree that there is a common trend where people OVERPRICE their 2nd hand bikes. A bike that is 2 or 3 years old should be at MOST 50% of the new price. You see bikes that are R20K new being sold for R14K when they are 3 years old. You might sell it but not to me.

if you selling - you bought the wrong bike in the first place.

if you bought the right bike in the first place and  you buying a second , third , or fourth - you starting to collect and appreciate the bike.

Really? So let me take this example, I have a Silverback Shift 1.0 which I want to sell. It's a 2012 model, new was R13 000 odd. So by you're reasoning if I were to ask R9000 slightly negotiable for it, it would be grossly overpriced. Know here are some more details:

1.) Nice brand new KCNC bar and stem and some new ESI chunky's worth R1400

2.) Brand new XT Shadow RD worth R1000 odd

3.) Fork was just serviced (everything not just lowers) and if I were to sell it I would do a service on the bike and rear shock first(complete rebuild on shock and full service replacing all bearings).

4.) Wheels have been converted to tubeless and there is new sealant in there.

So by all means, go and buy that stock standard dual 26er for R6000 and do all that then we see which is the better deal. Generalizations are easy to make, and I think that's why a lot of people attack the OP. I'll say it again, it's worth what the buyer and seller agree to.

Well, let's look at it in a different way: If you buy new, you get a lifetime warranty on the frame and 1 or 2 years on the components. What is that worth to you? If you buy that same bike second hand, but so little used that it makes no difference, you don't have any warranty. How much discount do you want to make it worth your while carrying the risk yourself? Whatever your answer is, that is how much you should take off the new price when you buy second hand. (Personally, 30 - 40% gets me interested, otherwise new starts to look too attractive) After that you take off some more for wear and tear.

So here is a test! Let all who have added their 2 cents estimate a realistic price for my bike. Not selling it but, it will be worth the exercise to see what the consensus is. Bike was list-priced new at R22 999 at the time.

Haha since my 2c was added I might as well. My road bike price knowledge sucks. But IMHO I would say round about R15 000 to R16 000 would seem fair to me if it is really almost spotless.

the OP never said anyone HAD to do anything, he stated his view and then asked for opinions.. people are far too quick to get excited over someone else's views... I stated it was a baseline to work against.. you can take the price\value of the bike originally, then do the same for the parts which you add or upgrade, its not a perfect science its a guideline..

Road bikes don't take as hard knocks as MTBs I think they hold their value a little longer that MTBs (again, my opinion, no need to get excited guys)

Not getting excited. Just keen to see how Hubbers value second hand bikes. That is, after all, what this site is used for.

I know you aren't getting excited, some other guys have though.. the exact reason I started this thread was to see how others look at valuing bikes....

so i think a simple formula won't work, cause there are too many variables in terms of component types, brands, general condition etc.

what would be cool is if thehubsa would data mine their database in terms of recently sold bikes, so that when selling, you could enter a few parameters (replacement value, age, upgrades etc.) and give an indication of how quick/desperate you are to sell the bike, and then the site tells you where you should pitch your selling price based on actual sales data...

edit: spelling

R13 000 is what I would offer if I was a buyer. Then we start to negotiate.

Agreed - it also largely depends what else is being advertised at the time. If there is a really good deal a 'normally' priced 2nd hand bike might seem steep.
