I need an alternative to transporting my bike(s). I currently take the front wheel off and dump it in the back with the seats down. I'm finding this a mission, especially with a filthy mtb.

So... I'm looking at a towbar mounted rack. What's a good one and what sort of towbar would I need - currently don't have one, so have the option of height adjustable, fixed height, goose neck etc... FWIW, Those strapon racks won't work on my car

opinions appreciated.

I'm actually assuming that a towbar mounted rack is better than a roof rack

First get quote on towbar.

It may well change your opinion on roof rack. (which I don't think are bad - just don't forget about the bikes when pulling into garage)

I have the Thule platform rack that does not require a towbar, can take two bikes easily. it attaches with built in latches. Really awesome

Spend the money once and get a ride on Thule tow-bar mounted rack. They work, they're secure and if you don't buy one now, you'll end up buying one later.

I have to second this. (Ok I have a Menabo Winny not a Thule but I got it for half the price of a Thule) Had a normal Thule hanging rack before. Which is fine.....to start. Platforms are sooooo much simpler and better for your bikes. As for which towbar...one that works, adjustables all have some play, mine is a Factory Fitted removable goose neck type, works a treat.

Can the bikes be locked? Reason I'm asking, is I've got a Holdfast rack that latches to my boot with straps, and I just got I new bike, and I was thinking it would be so easy for someone with a knife to just cut the straps and be off with the rack and the bike while I'm stopped at a robot or similar situation.

Do these not sway from side to side whilst driving?

I suspect the same with this one ...

There is zero movement from side to side and can take a ton of weight. Also it locks on so can not be removed while you are gone.

I have added a number plate since then :whistling:

Thats the one, straps are metal cable and are lockable.

Just googled it and saw that too, Cyclelab price is R5799. I'm thinking I'm just going to get a cable lock and lock the bike and rack to the tow hitch on my car.
