I have shimano Mt15 rims and matching hubs. It spins but very slowly and when pedaling it feels like an extra weight on the wheel probably cause they not that light either!

I discovered the bearings where on there way out and had them replaced. It is slightly better but I am not happy with it as as always they just seem to roll so much slower than any of my other bikes.

Checked some reviews online and this is normal for this hub even though the rims arent bad.

I have been looking to either replace the entire wheel set or the hubs. However what I really would like to buy is way out of my budget!

I have been contemplating some second hand wheels but I not sure if they are gonna be worth my while.

Any suggestions for a very tight budget for nice fast rolling hubs or wheelset?

Prob not much help....BUT.. I recently undertook disassembling my front hub and to my amazement i found there to be no problem at all inside there..The problem i had before i undertook the strip was a wobbly and sluggish wheel.. I merrily continued checking all my bearings on my mic to make sure they all conform and look at the inner raceways with a pen and could find no grooves and then i repacked the grease and reassembled..but heres the funny thing... I no longer have a sluggish wheel or a wobbly one.. I think the hub may have been over tightened thus causing a greater friction than normal.. i had a look online and found some articles about this and there is no torque requirement other than "you gotta feel it man" when assembling it.. As mentioned..it may/may not be relevant to you..

Decent hubs make a big difference do the changes gradually if the budget is tight, you can pick up very good hubs on the site for low cost just put in new bearings from bearing man or similar supplier and some grease etc and your bike will feel like a new machine.

Wheel upgrade can make a big difference and easily take 1kg off the weight of your bike with the right tyres but keep your old set so when you sell you send the old set with the bike and keep your own set for ongoing use. its a very worth while upgrade

All true, But I have what to get is the problem. Which wheel set or hubs are decent enough without breaking the bank and easy to get? Some of the brands can get really expensive, and this is a segment I havent had time yet to thoroughly go thru and make a decision and was hoping to get a feel from fellow hubbers.

Good Hubs to look at are Stans's , Hope's that are commonly used in SA and are durable and reliable so spares arent a problem and are readily offered at good prices in the hub classifieds, just check how many spokes your rims are because you will need the matching number of holes on the hubs

Looked at rims and hubs in lbs today. Weighed on scale there is less than 10g diff between Hope pro2 and DT Swiss 350...both quite OK hubs. Beware hubs with alloy freewheel bodies....cassettes eat these over time and some brands more than others. Do your research

Eddy, hubs have become stupidly expensive, saying that the Novatec hubs are pretty good and great value for money, also bear in mind you will need to budget for new spokes too.

Open up your Shimano MT15 hubs and check the cups (inside the hub), if they are OK continue using them (will save you plenty cash). The trick with Cup and Cone hubs is to tighten them with a little bit of play that the QR skewers then take up when "closed".

I'm a bit hard on hubs (95kg rider) and trashed the cups by neglecting maintenance on the rear hub, a rebuild would have cost me at least R800 using a similar cheap Shimano hub and new spokes. I ended up buying a new wheel-set for R1900 (found a very good deal on a set of 26" Fulcrums 5).

Nothing wrong with getting another set of wheels with nice hubs (like Hope's or others with cartridge bearings), but if you are still on 26" wheels keep an eye out for deals on new wheel-sets.

Have a look at Bitex hubs as well. Decent quality, 90 point engagement and pretty well priced.

Although if Hope's in the budget, there's no contest really.

Check the hub tightness ... Too tight makes it sticky ... too loose makes it wobble ... just right .. makes it spin ...

Heres a question: what grease is the best for hub bearings ?

Inside the the hubs i have used a very high quality grease (shell gadus) available at some motor spares shops in a tube form AND.....on all threads (hubs pedals and skewers) i have been applying copper compound..which i have found to be a huge advantage when removing them..
