I don't own a trek but my friend just got the new ex9 carbon and I took it for a spin on the weekend. Seriously fast bike. I couldn't believe how well it climbed.

It felt as if that bike was cheating somehow. I don't know how else to explain it.

What i told him was this:

'You know those toy cars you pull back and then they shoot forward?

Well I'm pretty sure trek put some sort of gadget like that in the rear there'

Bastards. And all this time I thought I needed to up my fitness.

I want the 2015 fuel ex 9.8 big time! Why are they sooooo slow in getting them to Jozi?

Have the 2012 Superfly 100 AL Pro, what a fantastic bike....and so was the Superfly I had before that. Will always keep this bike.

Any Trek Superfly owners out there ever changed the front fork for something with more travel than the original?

Just discovered something interesting.

I am doing an annual stripdown of my 2013 Superfly 100 AL Elite.

Some of the pivot bearings are a bit scratchy, so I went to the LBS that I bought it from to buy new bearings.

Only problems are:

  • Can't buy just the bearings.  Must buy "kits" that include new bolts etc, which cost R2,300 in total. Yikes, and f--k that!
  • The bearings they are presenting as replacements are not the same as the ones fitted as OEM.  The rear axle pivots and rocker pivots are clearly marked as VRS bearings, and the replacements are 2RS.  This means that the OEMs are full compliment bearings (no cage and double the amount of balls) and the replacements have cages.  This means that the replacements have about half the load bearing capacity as the originals, and will become pitted much more easily, which means more regular replacement.
Just be aware of this when you are paying for your bike to be serviced.

Yes, running my Superfly with 110mm up from 100mm. Have run it with 120mm but found it badly affected how the bike climbed.

Was reading about this on another forum (American I think). Some guys said something similar about the climbing others raved about 120mm on the Superfly. Not convinced it suits the Superfly....maybe then just go for Fuel or Remedy?

Thanks Shaun....I just cant understand whats taking the bike shops up here so long to get them in. I've researched this bike for ages now and am convinced its for me. However would like to check one out before just slapping in an order. One LBS said I should just try the 2014 version, almost identical and a lot cheaper. I disagree with his sales pitch!

Depends on the terrain that you ride and how you go about getting up the hills as well as the type of rider you are.

It does descend like something possessed running 120mm, and eats rock gardens as the head angle is a lot slacker.

For me racing at sharp end of the sport I found it had to much of an affect on climbing which is where your big time is made or lost. I think If I was on an XL frame instead of my L at 188cm the affect would be lessened as my weight would be more centered.

I also do a lot of riding in and around the world cup course in PMB where the climbs are super steep as in 27% in some places where you have to have your nose on the stem otherwise the front wheel is off the ground.

Have a fuel ex7 2008 model. Ridden it into the ground but still going strong (sort of). Chain stay broke at the weld join so got it fixed and the broke again at the other join so got that fixed. Other than that I've had no problems.

Just got myself a HT 29" so the trek is going to turn into a fun project or il never ride it again.

I kind of figured I was being sold up the river.  It appears that Rush Sports have just the bearings I need for the rebuild - and they seem to understand that not everyone is a moegoe.

It's so sad really for the LBS that sold me the bike.  I went in there with credit card in hand ready to spend.  Got presented with costs that were just not realistic.  So I walked out, did some more research, and now another shop is getting the business.  I also realised they don't know what they are talking about - which makes me avoid them even more. Reputation destroyed over some bearings.

Damm, I was thinking of doing some midnight shopping in your garage but I am a 58/21.5

Crazy nice collection though, one day when I'm big I'll do the same. Always been a Trek fan ever since my Trek TR20 bmx, why I sold that bike I will never know.

:w00t: Sold mine to take a girl on a date. Did not work out all that well for me. Damn I miss that bike.
