Hi guys !

So after riding my fixie for a while , i bought a momsen Al651 with the intention of converting it to ss. I have everything working perfectly without the use of a chain tensioner. I was lucky with the gear selection , running a 32x15.

The problem is that I will be changing the rear cog to a 14t as I over pedal on flat sections.

Is anyone using an eccentric bottom bracket or has slotted the rear of the frame to get chain tension without using a chain tensioner ?

I heard there is a guy in Parkhurst who is a single speed mtb legend , anybody know his name or have contact details for his shop ?

Thank's in advance for the help.

That is interesting, I didn't realise we had such people in this country.

Get a chain tensioner.

He must have been thinking of me, but I live in CT and in Sunningdale, not Parklands ... oh wait ... I see now ....

What a boss...Thanks guys. That first one with the dh chain guide is the best option I reckon. The rear tensioner spoils the clean look.

What gear ratios are you guys running on 650b's for trails such as avianto blue ?

Where can I find some single speed mtb races in gauteng ?

All races are bike races. SS, geared, whatever. It's a bike choice. Like wheel size, hardtail/full sus, steel, ally or carbon

There are alot of races that have a SS catagory but most dont. just go out and race.

As for Ratio not sure how strong you are but I would recommend starting on a 34:16 and working from that.

Been there, done that. It is a cleaner look, but there will have to be a little slack in the chain to accommodate the high spot. This slack can be felt when accelerating from freewheeling, etc and looses the directness from the SS that you will get with a properly set up SS frame or a spring loaded tensioner at the rear hanger.

My DH guide set up thinga ma bob exploded on me one ride and in a fix I fitted the On-One spring loaded tensioner.

What a huge difference in feel, more direct, no noise from a chain slapping about and very easy to remove the rear wheel.

Prior to this tensioner I have always been very apprehensive RE using one, and was never keen on the aesthetics, but from a fully functional stand point it is flipping awesome! The look has also grown on me :)

Nothing specific in Gauteng, but the Attakwas is a good SS race.

Great thanks !

I will give the dh style roller a chance first.

I have a rear dmr tensioner that's in a box , I'd prefer it to stay there , lol .

Thanks again for the help.

Where can I get a dh chain guide like that ? And do they fit square taper cranks ?

Possibly asking a lot of rookie questions.

The problem with horizontal dropouts compared to paragon sliders is that you might have difficulty getting the chain tension correct and the brake to fit properly .Eccentric BB solves that and also a normal frame with chain tensioner solves that problem .With paragon slider or similar the whole rear unit with the brake and wheel moves .Also much easier to change rear sprockets with a normal frame and tensioner

Never had issues with my old On-One SS with horizontal drop outs/track drop outs.

Paragon or EBB just makes things a little easier though.

My current sprocket choice does not allow me to get proper chain tension and have the rear brake fit perfectly on my inbred .If a take a chain like out is to tight and if i leave like it in the brake disc is slightly out of its groove .With 38 x 18 it was perfect .Running 36x 19 now
