Excluding my first bike, I have built all my bikes cos anything off the shelf is a compromise, like someone threw it all in a blender to meet a specific price point.

Mix & match of components.

Not the right saddle for me.

Stem generally too long.

Wheels not tubeless or to my liking

Tires not Tubeless

Stem, seatpost, bars saddle all different makes.

So I would buy a bike, sell everything I don't want (at a loss), and start upgrading = SUX

Here's what I want:

Carbon HT medium maybe large (I'm 1.79m)

Shimano XT all over

Ritchey Bars, seatpost & "Short" Stem

Ritchey Saddle

Ritchey, Mavic 29" wheels - Tubeless

XT Centre lock Rotors 180 front 160 rear

Conti or Schwalbe Tires

The frame measurements & geometry would determine Stem & bars.

Any Bike shops prepared to do custom builds???

I think most bike shops would do it for you, especially the smaller ones. Just usually comes out more expensive then buying a complete bike

I'm happy to do the build myself, in fact I prefer it, then I know no one took a shortcut.

But they generally want to sell me the full bike at new price and then "trade" me the components as "used"

Also try railroad me into the components they have stock i.e. Not willing to order specific parts.

I'm happy to pay fair price, but selling/ trading "new" parts as "used" & then paying "new" price again, feels a bit like non-consensual intercourse!

Also, just buying the components online is a bit rude price wise.

But maybe that is the only way

Why don't you just buy all the items you've mentioned and take it to bike shop to assemble?

This is fairly common practice....

Or just assemble yourself.

This is huge fun....cherry pick exactly what you want, do some homework on frames...shop around for the best prices(local and international)...stuff arrives

Build it....let us know how it goes

We would, but we're down South. Good luck with the build - it's always a lot of fun.

PS. At your height go for a Large frame and run a shorter stem if needed. One of our testers is 179 and have been running Large frames for several years.

I am 179 and prefer medium....snappier / lighter. Must be personal preference on the borderline height

I like the Large Frame / short stem idea. bit nervous to order unseen.

Good to know it works for someone the same height.

Exactly what I was thinking ... can't see this being a problem.

Most brands have frame only options too which you can kit as you wish.

I would gladly help you if you don't mind me sending it via courier.

Budget figure?

I am the same length and has my setup dialed in with short stem and wide bars.

im 184 on a medium, seatpost is at max, but have tried large and they feel slightly bulkier / less nimble.

Same here....my seatpost isnt at max though...large frames tend to feel oompa loompa when I ride them and of course will weigh a bit more.

i'm guessing yours is about 5cm lower than mine :w00t: (although it's based on inner leg length, and not overall height)

No...4.989898998cm :w00t:

But I tend to always go for 400mm posts vs shorter one...
