After visiting my LBS I notice everything is expensive.

I am trying to build something cheap, but for 6parts the bill is R700. I can not afford that anymore.

So my question is, where do you guys buy things like headsets, bb, chainbolts and things like that?

I cannot help the owner of LBS build his racebike anymore...

keep a lookout for online specials...stock up on tyres / chains / sealant / rings when they are cheap. Basically consumables.

Buying these from lbs will always come at a premium since they have overheads that the online guys dont have, however, they are convenient when you need something asap.

For 700 bucks he will not even be able to build himself a v-brake compatible front wheel.

Nope, I have everything, I just need a headset, that was R250. Chainbolts 4-R230, I was looking at grips R300. Adapter for disc brake R150. This is some of the cheapest parts I could get my hands on because it is for a cheap SS for commuting.

One very cool hubber helped me out with wheels, frame and handlebars, at a very good price.

To play devils advocate. Headset, decent price for something quite complex, Chainbolts, yes expensive, how often do they sell them? Grips, ESI chunky's are R200 odd at a lot of places, get thos work perfectly, adapter, once again low movement item.

Doubt you would get those much cheaper anywhere but Rouxtjie's post has you covered.

Headset price isn't bad, also disc brake adapter is ok

Most shops have chainring bolts for ±R140

if you want cheap grips, check here http://www.bradlights.co.za/6-grips , IIRC only white left

Chunky's grips is R300 there. Seems to me the shops with all the fancy glass and decorations are a whole lot mpre expensive than Jannie's bike shop. The price for manual labour is sky high!

Thanks rouxtjie. I want do bike mechanic course so that I can do everthing self.

sweet man, it is very satisfying being able to do your own maintenance, nevermind the money you save. There are loads of resources ito how-to. I would start with the most frequent things that need attention buying tools as you go. Get yourself a good set of hex and torx keys, shifting spanners and screwdrivers since they have multiple applications.

First being able to remove a chain, cassette and chain rings properly - Chainwhip and lockring remover

Set DR's for shifting

Replace / Clean BB....parktool makes cool tools...hopefully you have a bsa BB, they are winners to work on

Stans, spoke tape, tubeless valves and cores and compressor...for tubeless conversions

Bleeding brakes, brake pads and inserting new brake pads....Bleed kit(syringes and mineral oil / dot brake fluid)

Service hubs...rubber mallet, different socket sizes and wood in different shapes and sizes for drifts, bearings for your hub(try and write the codes down)

This is basic bike maintenace and servicing...I wouldnt look into suspension servicing until you have the tools for the above since they are the most frequent items on your bike that needs attention.

R700 for 6 parts? were you buying 6 bolts that its so cheap?

Anyways, I buy off of Chainreactioncycles when I want a specific item or I want to buy an expensive item at much lower cost. I'm ordering a set of pedals tonight for roughly R800 (won't go over R1000 if I get additional tax) and the cheapest in RSA I could find was R1200 for special order anyways.

You have until tonight to look and let me know via inbox if you want to discuss a combined shipment

Nee moer! That is taking a fat chance, then I understand your irritation. For tools parktools are the best quality, but below is a thread for some homemade tools, and I also managed to find some nice cheaper alternatives at like 70% of the quality at my LBS and Sportsmans Warehouse (Fourways, best selection)
