My old man (76 yr) still has large legs and damn big calfs. But my brother and I have the kinda of legs that all those jokes were made about. I have seen bigger legs hanging out a sparrows nest,I've seen more meat on a butchers pencil....etc etc heard them all. Used to complain till I started cycling, climbing is our thing.

You can increase the muscle mass, even if you don't really have the biggest ones around. But like mentioned before it's all about genetics, really.

But if you would like to increase your muscle mass, I have read before that doing stuff like calf raises and general exercises that target that area, quick Google search should help for that, you should do them in quick burst, like with calf raises go down normal speed but thrust yourself up, this should work, or so they say.

I have been doing it lately because I want to target those muscles a bit more, and... I can't really tell you if it works or not because I have only been doing for a few weeks, a few months and you should see some difference, I think.

But really, at the end of the day, it really genetic more than it's earned.

To be honest I don't really see quick bursts increasing muscle mass, but it will certainly do wonders for explosive power .

I been told that one of the bones in the back of your foot determines your calf size - this is again genetic. If this bone is longer more leverage and thus smaller calves (less mussel required) if short (which I unfortunately have) bigger calve mussels and more weight to carry up the climbs!

This is not true, what determines calf size simply is how often you need to kick your husband up the ass to mow the lawn. ^_^

1. I am male.

2. My sister had big calves way before marriage age from about 13 - at this age already she could kick start a Boeing 747- probably should not have said that!!!

One of the hardest to build and one of the easiest to tear to.

Calves need to be warmed up properly before you train them.....a popped calf can take months to heal.

Must say, I have no trouble building my thighs and calves - all credit to my SS in the background. However, I do struggle to build my upper body and I have tried EVERYTHING.
