Steady on, I am a motorcyclist, and I don't do this kind of thing!!

I have a helmet if required, however there seem to be a lot of those pledged

BMW topbox from my F650GS (Hint, I am a MotorCyclist as well)

Right, so I've spoken to Deborah at Servest and thankfully Siphiwe is recovering steadily. It seems that somebody already beat us to giving him a new bike, but they are still so happy we are getting involved and helping. They want me to meet with them to hand over the donation and take a pic for their internal magazine.

We have collected some cash and the Magic-shine guys will be sending some stuff from Cape Town. So what suggestions for to buy for Siphiwe? How about a helmet and a reflective jacket or something, and the rest cash?

GG get some reflective tape for his backpack if he rides with one. But definitely get a high viz jacket.

100% agreed, I have had a few close encounters with cyclists at night, narrowly avoided only due to the reflection of my lights off their teeth. Somehow the message has`nt sunk in yet that you must make yourself visible when you`re on a bike in the dark.

Long time since an update.

After much e-mail tennis, I have set up to meet Siphiwe at Servest on Tuesday at 8:30am to present him with goodies and our contribution.  Going to Cape Town for work later this week so will get the stuff from Magic-shine guys when there.  I'll look for a high-vi and perhaps a good bike lock on Saturday.

Thanks for the donations.  For the sake of transparency I have received R1,600 in contributions from (order last to first):

PeterG, Talus, Brendon, Fishhoek Cash Dep, Vangar, Maniax, Cloud9.

If anyone sent money and you're not listed - please let me know.

Will post pics next week.

This is the final chapter, and it's a happy one.

I met with Siphiwe this morning at Servest in Wapadrand.  I'm not going to go into details, but this guy comes from a difficult background and is doing everything he can to uplift himself and his family.

He joined Servest as a temp in May and the company took him on as a perm recently because of his can-do attitude.  He rides 90mins to work and back every day.

This guy gives me hope for South Africa, and I'm inspired by his attitude and humility.  I'm not sure I could face such adversity and still come out smiling and striving.

I never managed to get to the bike shop to buy a hi-vi, but I put together some things he would find useful along with with the fantastic lights provided by Magic-Shine.

I gave him my rare Dr Evil backpack, a water bottle, a waterproof cell phone pouch, a hand towel for drying off the sweat after morning commute, front and rear headlights and a golf shirt from Magic-Shine, a drawstring race-bag for towels etc, and finally the envelope with the monies collected from Hubbers.

Siphiwe was ecstatic with the goodies and expressed his appreciation to all of us.  He said that all through winter he would ride to work in the dark and this stuff would help make his ride safer.

Photos were taken for their internal magazine.  I must  thank Servest for facilitating the hand-over of our contribution and specifically to Mikki and Tim at the Lynwood branch for their support of Siphiwe.  They have committed to helping with charging the lights at work and getting the cash into his bank account.

I have more information about what actually happened on the day of the incident, and if anyone really wants details I will provide them via PM, no point in reopening old wounds here.  Let's just say Siphiwe didn't go looking for trouble.

Siphiwe's bike was fairly trashed at the front from the incident, but if anyone can use the back part of it, he is willing to donate it.

His new bike needs a new fork, but is still serviceable at this point.

Thank you for this post today. Been feeling bleak this morning after reading about another cyclist down. A huge thumbs up for the people helping those in need and making the time. It's always great to be reminded of people that rise up from difficult situations and become better for it.
